Viscount Portman
Viscount Portman, in the County of Somerset, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 28 March 1873, for the former Lord Lieutenant of Somerset and Liberal Member of Parliament Edward Portman, 1st Baron Portman. He had already been created Baron Portman, of Orchard Portman, on 27 January 1837, also in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. His son, the second Viscount, represented Shaftesbury and Dorset in the House of Commons as a Liberal. , the titles have been held by one of the latter's great-great-grandsons, the tenth Viscount, since 1999. Orchard Portman is a village and civil parish in Somerset, England, situated south of Taunton. The village has a population of 150. The parish includes the hamlet of Thurlbear and the nearby Thurlbear Wood and Quarrylands Site of Special Scientific Interest. St Thomas' church in Thurlbear is home to the heaviest complete set (cast together at the same time) of four church bells in the world. History The estate was known as ''Orceard'' and was given by King Æthelwulf of Wessex to Taunton's minster church in 854. The parish of Thurlbear was part of the North Curry Hundred, while Orchard Portman was part of the Taunton Deane Hundred. A portman was a medieval designation for a freeman or burgess of a port. The term was used at a number of places across England: Orford, Ipswich The term was used in Anglo-Saxon Wessex although it remained uncommon. Development and production The silent partner in Auroraglas purchased the rights to the center-cockpit Coronado 35/ Columbia 36 design from Columbia Yachts and the tooling was modified to become the aft-cockpit Portman 36. Other modifications included relocating the ports from the hull to a newly designed coach house and designing a new hull-to-deck joint. The design was built by Auroraglas and later by Watkins Yachts in Clearwater, Florida, United States after the acquisition of Watkins and its merger with Auroraglas.
