Porta Metronia
Porta Metronia is a gate in the third-century Aurelian Walls of Rome, Italy. The gate is located in the southern section of the wall between Porta San Giovanni to the east and Porta Latina to the south. During the tenth century, beyond this gate was marshland called the ''Prata Decii'' or the ''Decenniae''.Gregorovius, Ferdinand, ''History of the City of Rome in the Middle Ages'', Volume 3 (1895), pg. 530 At the end of the Middle Ages, the gate was closed and the entrance bricked up. Because of increasing traffic in the modern era, four main passages were created beside the original gate. The ground level around the gate has risen significantly through the ages, leaving the original passage partially underground. Aurelian Walls
The Aurelian Walls () are a line of city walls built between 271 AD and 275 AD in Rome, Italy, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Aurelian. They superseded the earlier Servian Wall built during the 4th century BC. The walls enclosed all the seven hills of Rome plus the Campus Martius and, on the right bank of the Tiber, the Trastevere district. Porta San Giovanni (Rome)
Porta San Giovanni is a gate in the Aurelian Wall of Rome, Italy, named after the nearby Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran. History It consists of a single grand arch built for Pope Gregory XIII in ''opera forse'' by Giacomo della Porta or, it is argued, Giacomo del Duca, who had collaborated with Michelangelo on the Porta Pia. The confusion is because the chronology of the era merely speaks of a famous architect called Giacomo. Popular tradition insists the architect was Della Porta, for he died in crowds at the gate, "which he had built" of violent indigestion brought on by melons and watermelons, returning from a trip to the Castelli Romani. The Porta Latina (Latin - ''Latin Gate'') is a single-arched gate in the Aurelian Walls of ancient Rome. History It marked the Rome end of the Via Latina and gives its name to the church of San Giovanni a Porta Latina. Most of the present structure dates to Honorius, including the arch's voussoirs (though they are often wrongly attributedAs in Touring Club Italiano, ''Roma e dintorni'' (Milan 1965), p. 388. to a 6th-century restoration by Belisarius, due to a cross and circle sculpted on the inner keystone, and the Chi Rho between Α and Ω sculpted on the outer keystone). Porta Nomentana
The Porta Nomentana was one of the gates in the Aurelian Walls of Rome, Italy. It is located along viale del Policlinico, around 70 m east of Porta Pia. It is now blocked and merely a boundary wall for the British Embassy. History It was built as a single-arch gate between 270 and 273 AD by the emperor Aurelian. Its original right-hand semicircular tower (on ''quadrato'' foundations) is still to be seen, while its left-hand one incorporated a tomb, presumed to belong to Quintus Aterius, a famous orator at the court of Tiberius, called by Tacitus "an old man made rotten by flattery" (''senex foedissimae adulationis'') and mentioned by him as the first to get up to refute Tiberius's feigned refusal of the imperial crown. Marble from that tomb was used to cover the gate in restorations by Honorius in 403, who at the same time blocked the two nearby posterns in the direction of Castra Praetoria and restored the porta Salaria.
