Port-Glasgow Athletic was a football club based in Port Glasgow, Scotland. The club was formed in 1878 and originally named Broadfield before changing their name in 1881. They played in the Scottish Football League between 1893 and 1911, and were based at Clune Park. Originally the town name was spelled Port-Glasgow, with a hyphen, this style was dropped after WW2. History Originally based at Devol Farm, Port Glasgow, the club moved to a new ground called Clune Park on the town's Glasgow Road. The Port played for one season in the Scottish Football Alliance in 1891–92 and spent 1892–93 playing cup-ties and friendlies. They rejoined the Scottish Alliance for 1893–94, but before the new season, the Alliance was more or less absorbed by the Scottish Football League as its Division Two. Port Glasgow
Port Glasgow (, ) is the second-largest town in the Inverclyde council area of Scotland. The population according to the 1991 census for Port Glasgow was 19,426 persons and in the 2001 census was 16,617 persons. The most recent census in 2011 states that the population has declined to 15,414. It is located immediately to the east of Greenock and was previously a burgh in the county of Renfrewshire (historic), Renfrewshire. Originally a fishing hamlet named Newark, Port Glasgow came about as a result of large ships being unable to navigate the shallow and meandering River Clyde to the centre of the city of Glasgow. Because of this, it was formed as a remote port for Glasgow in 1668 and became known as 'New Port Glasgow', which was shortened to 'Port Glasgow' in 1775. Gladstone Hamilton
Gladstone Hamilton (23 July 1879 – 12 December 1961) was a Scottish footballer who played as an outside right in the Scottish League for Port Glasgow Athletic, Ayr, St Mirren, Morton and Queen's Park. He was capped by Scotland in 1906 and was the only serving Port Glasgow Athletic player to have been selected for international duty. Personal life Hamilton's elder brothers Alexander and James were also Scotland international players. Scottish Qualifying Cup
The Scottish Qualifying Cup was a football competition played in Scotland between 1895 and 2007. During that time, apart from a brief spell in the 1950s, it was the only way for non-league teams to qualify for the Scottish Cup. The Qualifying Cup was open to all full member clubs of the Scottish Football Association, who were not members of the Scottish Premier League or Scottish Football League. In June 2007 the Scottish Football Association announced a new format for the Scottish Cup from season 2007–08 that would allow all full member clubs direct entry into the competition and consequently the Qualifying Cup competition was scrapped. Scottish Football Union
The Scottish Football Union was a football league competition that existed from 1906 till the outbreak of the First World War. It was formed after the collapse of the Scottish Football Alliance. Initial membership of the Union was: Alloa Athletic, Bathgate, Bo'ness, Broxburn, Heart of Midlothian 'A', Kilmarnock 'A', King's Park, Rangers 'A', Renton, Royal Albert, St Mirren 'A' and Stenhousemuir. Renton withdrew from the league with seven games to play and Rangers 'A' were declared inaugural champions after Bathgate indicated their unwillingness to participate in a play-off game with them, despite finishing level on points. The following season, Stenhousemuir withdrew after six games played and were replaced by Wishaw Thistle.
