Popular Democratic Union (Portugal)
The Popular Democratic Union (, , or UDP) is a Marxist political movement in Portugal. The UDP transformed itself into a political association at its 15th congress due to its merger with other left-wing parties in the Left Bloc. History The party was founded in December 1974 as a common mass front of the Committee for Support to the Reconstruction of the Party (Marxist–Leninist) (CARP(ML)), Revolutionary Marxist–Leninist Unity (URML) and Revolutionary Communist Committees (Marxist–Leninist). UDP ran lists in the first free election in Portugal in 1975, and elected one MP in that election. UDP also ran in the subsequent elections until 1983. After that it ran integrated in the electoral lists of the Portuguese Communist Party until 1991. Joana Rodrigues Mortágua (born 24 June 1986) is a Portuguese politician. A member of the Left Bloc (''Bloco de Esquerda''), she has been a deputy in the Portuguese Assembly of the Republic since 2015, representing Setúbal. Early life and education Mortágua was born on 24 June 1986 in Alvito in the Beja District of Portugal. The Socialist Alternative Movement (, MAS), formerly known as the Left Revolutionary Front () is a Trotskyist organization in Portugal. It was the Portuguese section of the International Workers' League (Fourth International) until they split in 2017. It ran on a joint list with the Madeira-based Labour Party in the 2015 parliamentary elections. The party was founded as the Left Revolutionary Front (FER) in 1983. This was dissolved in 2005 and merged with the student activist movement Ruptura (which was part of the Left Bloc) to form Ruptura/FER. The Revolutionary Socialist Party (, , or PSR) was a left-wing party in Portugal, founded in 1978 after the merger of two Trotskyist parties: the Internationalist Communist League ( LCI) and the Workers Revolutionary Party (, PRT). The LCI and PRT were both part of the reunified Fourth International. The International recognised the PSR as its Portuguese section. In 1998 Party renamed itself in order to join with some other left-wing parties in founding the Left Bloc ( or BE). The organisation retained the acronym (PSR) and became a civil society organisation under the name Revolutionary Socialist Political Association (''Associação Política Socialista Revolucionária'' (APSR)).
