''Poptical Illusion'' (stylised as ''POPtical uoᴉsnllI'') is the eighteenth studio album by the Welsh musician and composer John Cale, released on 14 June 2024 by Double Six Records, Double Six and Domino Recording Company, Domino. In contrast to his previous album ''Mercy (John Cale album), Mercy'' (2023) which featured many collaborators at different studios, ''Poptical Illusion'' was produced by Cale along with his manager Nita Scott in his Los Angeles studio with Cale performing most of the instruments. Background On 26 March 2024 the first single from the album, "How We See the Light", was released along with a music video directed by Pepi Ginsberg. On 8 May the second single, "Shark-Shark", was released with a music video directed by Abigail Portner. John Cale
John Davies Cale (born 9 March 1942) is a Welsh musician, composer, and record producer who was a founding member of the American rock band the Velvet Underground. Over his six-decade career, Cale has worked in various styles across rock, drone, classical, avant-garde and electronic music. John Cale studied music at Goldsmiths College, University of London (UoL), before relocating in 1963 to New York City's downtown music scene, where he performed as part of the Theatre of Eternal Music and formed the Velvet Underground. Since leaving the band in 1968, Cale has released seventeen solo studio albums, including the widely acclaimed '' Paris 1919'' (1973) and '' Music for a New Society'' (1982). Fretless Bass
A fretless bass is an electric bass guitar whose neck lacks frets and thus is smooth like traditional string instruments, and like the neck of an acoustic double bass. While the fretless bass is played in all styles of music, it is most common in pop, rock, and jazz. It first saw widespread use during the 1970s, although some players used them before then. Electric Piano
An electric piano is a musical instrument that has a piano-style musical keyboard, where sound is produced by means of mechanical hammers striking metal strings or reeds or wire tines, which leads to vibrations which are then converted into electrical signals by pickups (either magnetic, electrostatic, or piezoelectric).
