Poppie Nongena
''Poppie Nongena'' is a 2019 South African biographical drama film written and directed by award-winning director Christiaan Olwagen. The film is based on a biographical novel ''Die swerfjare van Poppie Nongena'' (''The Long Journey of Poppie Nongena'') by Elsa Joubert which is also considered as one of the finest African novels of the twentieth century. The film stars Clementine Mosimane playing the title role, Anna-Mart van der Merwe and Chris Gxalaba in the lead roles. The film was released on 31 January 2020 and received positive reviews from the critics. It won several awards and nominations at a few film festivals. Elsa Joubert
Elsabé Antoinette Murray Joubert OIS (19 October 1922 – 14 June 2020) was a Sestigers Afrikaans-language writer. She rose to prominence with her novel ''Die swerfjare van Poppie Nongena'' (The Long Journey of Poppie Nongena), which was translated into 13 languages, as well as staged as a drama and filmed as '' Poppie Nongena''. Early life and career Elsa Joubert was born and raised in the Cape settlement of Paarl and matriculated from the all-girls school La Rochelle in Paarl in 1939. She then studied at the University of Stellenbosch from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1942 and an SED (Secondary Education Diploma) in 1943. She continued her studies at the University of Cape Town which she left with a Master's degree in Dutch-Afrikaans literature in 1945. Silwerskerm Film Festival
The Silwerskerm Film Festival ( af, Silwerskerm FilmFees), usually called the Silwerskerm Fees, is a film festival held annually in Camps Bay, South Africa. The festival has been held every August since 2010 and is one of the only Afrikaans film festivals in the world. With around 5000 tickets sold and 6500 admissions each year, it is considered as a niche Afrikaans film festival. Up to 30 films are shown in several sections across cinematic genres.
