Popovo, Bulgaria
Popovo ( , from , ''pop'', meaning "priest", and the placename suffix '' -ovo'', literally "the priest's village") is a town in northeastern Bulgaria, part of Targovishte Province. It is the administrative centre of the homonymous Popovo Municipality. In 2021, it had a population of 13,324 and an absolute Bulgarian majority. The town was first mentioned in an Ottoman tax register of 1555. Popovo Saddle in Imeon Range on Smith Island in the South Shetland Islands, Antarctica is named after Popovo. Geography The town is built along the length of the Popovska river (also called Popovski Lom or Kalakoch Dere) on top of two hills opposite from one another and in the valley as well. Leningrad Oblast (, ; ; ) is a federal subjects of Russia, federal subject of Russia (an oblast). The oblast has an area of and a population of 2,000,997 (2021 Russian census, 2021 Census); up from 1,716,868 recorded in the 2010 Russian census, 2010 Census. Novgorod Oblast () is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). Its administrative center is the city of Veliky Novgorod. Some of the oldest Russian cities, including Veliky Novgorod and Staraya Russa, are located in the oblast. Tver Oblast (, ) is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). Its administrative center is the city of Tver. From 1935 to 1990, it was known as Kalinin Oblast (). Population: Tver Oblast is a region of lakes, such as Seliger and Brosno. Much of the remaining area is occupied by the Valdai Hills, where the Volga, the Western Dvina, and the Dnieper have their source. Popovo (župa)
In the Middle Ages, most of the territory of the Popovo field by the Trebišnjica was part of the ''župa'' of Popovo (), and was part of the Hum province and form at least 1322 Banate of Bosnia and later Bosnian Kingdom. It encompassed most of the tribal territories of Vlasi Bobani, Vlasi Žurovci, Vlasi Hrabreni and Vlasi Burmazi. On the north it encompassed parts of the Ljubinje area, where it bordered župas Dabar, Ljubinje, Ljubomir and Dubrava. On the south it bordered with Bosansko Primorje county, and Trebinje area with eponymous župa to the east, and Zažabalje to the west. The Bosansko Primorje county was later acquired by the Republic of Ragusa from Bosnian monarch, namely kings Tvrtko II and Ostoja, through sequence of purchase arrangements and contracts.
