''Poortmannia'' is a genus of flowering plants belonging to the family Solanaceae. It is also in Solanoideae subfamily, tribe Solandreae Miers and also subtribe Juanulloinae. The genus has only one known species, ''Poortmannia speciosa'' . Its native range is tropical South America and it is found in the countries of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. It is found in moist evergreen and montane forests at altitudes of above sea level. Description They are epiphytic shrubs, root-climbing lianas or small trees. It has cylindrical stems with verrucose bark. The leaves are coriaceous, long and elliptic, oblong or oblanceolate shaped, entire, abaxially prominently veined. The petiole (leaf stalk) is short and stout. The inflorescence are axillary with few flowered cymes. The pedicels (flower stalk) are shorter than the peduncles. Emmanuel Drake Del Castillo
Emmanuel Drake del Castillo (28 December 1855 – 14 May 1904) was a French botanist. He was born at Paris and studied with Louis Édouard Bureau (1830–1918) at the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle (National Museum of Natural History). Between 1886 and 1892, he published ''Illustrationes Florae Insulae Maris Pacifici'' ("Illustrations of the flora of the islands of the Pacific Ocean") a summarization of his work on the flora of French Polynesia. He also studied the flora of Madagascar. In addition, he put together a herbarium which contained more than 500,000 samples. The Solanaceae , or nightshades, are a family of flowering plants that ranges from annual and perennial herbs to vines, lianas, epiphytes, shrubs, and trees, and includes a number of agricultural crops, medicinal plants, spices, weeds, and ornamentals.
