Pondicherry, officially known as Puducherry, is the Capital city, capital and most populous city of the Puducherry (union territory), Union Territory of Puducherry in India. The city is in the Puducherry district on the southeast coast of India and is surrounded by the Bay of Bengal to the east and the state of Tamil Nadu, with which it shares most of its culture, heritage, and language. History Puducherry, formerly known as Pondicherry, gained its significance as "the French Riviera of the East" after the advent of French colonialisation in India. Pondicherry Municipal Council
The Pondicherry Municipal Council () is the municipality of Pondicherry, India. Pondicherry has had a French system of municipal administration since 1880 and till the last poll held in 1968. Recently, in 2006 again municipal elections were held. History The French Metropolitan Decree dated 12 March 1880 adopted a six-year term of office for mayors, municipal councillors and commune panchayats. From then all the civil record were maintained perfectly in Puducherry Union Territory. In the past, municipal administration was virtually the pivot of the whole administrative machinery in Puducherry. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram (French: ''Ashram de Sri Aurobindo'') is a spiritual community (ashram) located in Pondicherry (city), Pondicherry, in the Indian territory of Puducherry (union territory), Puducherry. Aayi Mandapam (monument)
Aayi Mandapam, also known as Park Monument (), is a white monument in Puducherry (city), Pondicherry, India, built during the time of Napoleon III, Emperor of France. It is situated in the center of Bharati Park. The monument commemorates the provision of water to the city during French colonial rule. Manakula Vinayagar Temple
Manakula Vinayagar Temple is a Ganesha temple in the Union Territory of Puducherry, India. Dedicated to the god Ganesa, it is a popular pilgrimage site and tourist destination in Puducherry. The temple is of considerable antiquity and predates French occupation of the territory.
