Polytain
Polytain (22 April 1989 – after 2000) was a French Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Unraced as a juvenile, he won his first two races and then finished third before finishing third in the Prix La Force and then recording an upset win in the Prix du Jockey Club. His subsequent form was disappointing as he failed to win in his remaining nine races. He made no impact as a breeding stallion. Background Polytain was a chestnut horse bred in France by Jean-Luc Lagardère. He was sired by Bikala, who won the Prix du Jockey Club in 1981 and the Prix Ganay in 1982. The best of his offspring was probably Apple Tree whose wins included the Europa-Preis, Turf Classic, Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and Coronation Cup. Polytain's dam Paulistana was sired by the Santa Anita Handicap winner Pretense and was a granddaughter of Tempted. Apple Tree (horse)
Apple Tree (6 March 1989 – 16 December 2018) is a French Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. During a racing career which lasted from September 1991 until October 1995 he competed in France, Germany, England, the United States and Japan, winning seven of his twenty-six races. After showing promise as a two-year-old he won the Prix Greffulhe and the Preis von Europa in 1992. As a four-year-old he ran prominently in several major races before winning the Prix du Prince d'Orange and the Turf Classic. He reached his peak as a five-year-old in 1994 when he defeated top-class international fields in the Coronation Cup and the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. After his retirement from racing he stood as a breeding stallion with limited success. Lanfranco "Frankie" Dettori (; born 15 December 1970), is an Italian jockey who was based in England for a career spanning over 35 years. He was British flat racing Champion Jockey three times (1994, 1995 and 2004) and rode the winners of 287 Group 1 races including 23 winners of the British Classic Races. His most celebrated achievement was riding all seven winners on British Festival of Racing Day at Ascot Racecourse on 28 September 1996. The Prix du Jockey Club, sometimes referred to as the French Derby, is a Group 1 flat horse race in France open to three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. It is run at Chantilly over a distance of 2,100 metres (about 1 mile and 2½ furlongs) each year in early June. History The format of the race was inspired by the English Derby, and it was named in homage to the Jockey Club based at Newmarket in England. Bikala
Bikala (12 March 1978 – 25 December 1994) was an Irish-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Having been bought very cheaply as a yearling he developed into a top-class middle-distance performer and was rated among the best horses in Europe at three and four years of age. He won the Prix du Jockey Club in 1981 and Prix Ganay in 1982 as well as finishing second in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. He was retired to stud at the end of 1982 and had some success as a sire of winners. Background Bikala was, a big, strong bay horse with a narrow white stripe, bred in Ireland. Since 2016, it is run each November at Chantilly Racecourse over a distance of 1,000 metres (about 5 furlongs).
