Polycentridae
Leaffishes are small fishes of the family Polycentridae. They consist of four genera found in fresh and brackish water in South America and Africa. The African species were formerly placed in the family Nandidae (otherwise found only in Asia), but recent taxonomic studies have affirmed their relationship to the South American species.Collins, R.A., R. Britz, and L. Ruber (2015). Phylogenetic systematics of leaffishes (Teleostei: Polycentridae, Nandidae). J Zoolog Syst Evol Res 53(4). Their taxonomic placement was previously debated, but they are now generally placed in the order Cichliformes. All of these fishes are highly specialized ambush predators that resemble leaves, down to the point that their swimming style resembles a drifting leaf (thus the common name leaf fish); when a prey animal - such as an aquatic insect or smaller fish - comes within range, the fish attacks, swallowing the prey potentially within a quarter of a second. Monocirrhus Polyacanthus
The Amazon leaffish (''Monocirrhus polyacanthus''), or South American leaffish, is a species of fish belonging to the family Polycentridae. It is found in the Amazon basin in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela, where it inhabits edges of rivers and lakes, and streams. It is generally a low-density species that lives in slow-moving or essentially stagnant waters in areas with plant debris. Amazon leaffish are sometimes kept in aquariums, but they require acidic water, low light and live prey. Appearance The Amazon leaffish reaches a maximum standard length of , and a total length of . As suggested by its common name, it closely resembles a dead leaf. The flattened body and filament at the tip of the lower jaw (resembling a stalk) further enhances its similarity to a leaf. It is gray-brown, but can change its color to some extent. There is no lateral line and its large mouth can be protracted to as much as 60% of the head length. Cichliformes
Cichliformes is an order of fishes. Its members were previously classified under the order Perciformes, but now many authorities consider it to be an independent order within the subseries Ovalentaria. The earliest fossils are known from the Eocene. Taxonomy There are three families within the Cichliformes; the leaffishes are a small family consisting of 4 genera and 5 species, the convict blennies are a small family consisting of a single genus and two species, while the cichlids are one of the largest vertebrate families with over 202 genera and more than 1700 species. These families look physically dissimilar from one another, with only molecular data revealing their close relationships. The following taxonomy is based on the Catalog of Fishes (2025) * Polycentridae T. N. Gill, 1858 (leaffishes) * Pholidichthyidae D.S. Jordan, 1896 (Convict blennies) * Cichlidae Cichlids () are a large, diverse, and widespread family of percomorph fish in the family Cichlidae, o ...
