Polycaon (beetle)
''Polycaon'' is a genus of horned powder-post beetles in the family Bostrichidae. There are at least four described species in ''Polycaon''. Description Beetles in this genus are 10.5-25.5 mm long with flattened bodies. The head is visible from above, instead of being hidden under a hoodlike pronotum like in some other bostrichids. The sides of the pronotum are convex. The tibia of each foreleg has a large, curved spine at its apex and has two terminal spurs inside. Polycaon Stoutii
''Polycaon stoutii'', the black polycaon or Stout's branch borer, is a species of woodboring beetle in the Bostrichidae family. It is found in North America in British Columbia, the Pacific Coast states, and Arizona, but has spread elsewhere due to the shipping of wood products. Relationship with wood ''Polycaon stoutii'' breeds in hardwoods. The female bores into the wood and lays its eggs in a tunnel. Usually, these host trees are dead or dying, but they are reported to bore into healthy ones as well. Beetle
Beetles are insects that form the Taxonomic rank, order Coleoptera (), in the superorder Holometabola. Their front pair of wings are hardened into wing-cases, elytra, distinguishing them from most other insects. Bostrichidae
The Bostrichidae are a family of beetles with more than 700 described species. They are commonly called auger beetles, false powderpost beetles, or horned powderpost beetles. Anatomy The head of most auger beetles cannot be seen from above, as it is downwardly directed and hidden by the thorax. Exceptions are the powderpost beetles (subfamily Lyctinae), and members of the subfamily Psoinae. ''Bostrychoplites cornutus'' has large, distinctive thoracic horns, and is found in parts of Africa and Arabia; it is often imported to Europe as larvae in African wooden bowls ("ethnic souvenirs") . Prothorax
The prothorax is the foremost of the three segments in the thorax of an insect, and bears the first pair of legs. Its principal sclerites (exoskeletal plates) are the pronotum (dorsal), the prosternum ( ventral), and the propleuron (lateral) on each side. The prothorax never bears wings in extant insects (except in some cases of atavism), though some fossil groups possessed wing-like projections. All adult insects possess legs on the prothorax, though in a few groups (e.g., the butterfly family Nymphalidae) the forelegs are greatly reduced. In many groups of insects, the pronotum is reduced in size, but in a few it is hypertrophied, such as in all beetles ( Coleoptera).
