Polokwane City Football Club is a South African professional association football, football club based in the city of Polokwane in the Limpopo province that currently plays in the first tier South African Premiership. The team plays its home matches at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. History Polokwane City FC was established in 2012 although after the owners of Bay United F.C., Bay United sold the franchise to the Mogaladi family. After playing in various temporary venues, the club was moved officially from Port Elizabeth to Polokwane City. Bay United originally came into existence in 2006 when the franchise of the struggling National First Division club Maritzburg United F.C., Maritzburg United was purchased and relocated to Port Elizabeth. The club spent 2008–09 Premier Soccer League, one season in the Premier Soccer League, and the other years of its existence in the National First Division. 2012–13 National First Division
The 2012–13 National First Division was played from September 2012 until May 2013, and is the second tier of South Africa's professional football. Polokwane City won the league, earning promotion to the 2013–14 Premiership. Santos and Mpumalanga Black Aces finished second and third respectively, qualifying for the 2012–13 PSL Playoff Tournament, which Mpumalanga Black Aces won, also earning them promotion to the 2013–14 Premiership. Clubs played a varying number of games over the course of the season due to a number of boycotts which took place at the beginning of the season. The results faced legal disputes by Thanda Royal Zulu and Chippa United which were eventually dismissed, and the trophy was only handed to Polokwane City at the start of the following season. 2019–20 South African Premiership
The 2019–20 South African Premiership season (known as the ABSA Premiership for sponsorship reasons, and also commonly referred to as the PSL after the governing body) was the 24th season of the Premiership since its establishment in 1996. The season began in August 2019 and concluded in September 2020. Mamelodi Sundowns were the two-time defending champions. This season's winner will qualify for the 2020–21 CAF Champions League along with the second-placed team. The 3rd placed team and Nedbank Cup winners qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup. The season was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It resumed on 11 August 2020 after more than three months of suspension. Mamelodi Sundowns won the title in the last day of the competition, they beat Kaizer Chiefs who were leading for more than half of the season. Bidvest Wits were the defending champions, having won the previous 2016–17 South African Premier Division season.
