Polly Allen Mellen
Harriette Allen "Polly" Mellen (June 18, 1924 – December 11 or 12, 2024) was an American stylist and fashion editor. For more than 60 years, she served as the fashion editor at ''Harper's Bazaar'' and ''Vogue''. From 1991 to 1999, she was the creative director of '' Allure''. Mellen formally retired from Condé Nast Publications in 1994 and remained a consultant on various projects. Background Harriette Allen was born on June 18, 1924, to a wealthy family in West Hartford, Connecticut, and attended Miss Porter's School. She always preferred to go by "Polly". She worked as a nurse's aide in World War II. Career Harriette Allen moved to New York in 1949. She began her career as the protégée of Diana Vreeland. Irving Penn (June 16, 1917October 7, 2009) was an American photographer known for his fashion photography, portraits, and still lifes. Penn's career included work at ''Vogue (magazine), Vogue'' magazine, and independent advertising work for clients including Issey Miyake and Clinique. His work has been exhibited internationally and continues to inform the art of photography. The Council of Fashion Designers of America, Inc. (CFDA), founded in 1962 by publicist Eleanor Lambert, and headquartered in Manhattan, is a not-for-profit trade association comprising a membership of over 450 American fashion and accessory designers. A centenarian is a person who has reached the age of 100. Because life expectancies at birth worldwide are well below 100, the term is invariably associated with longevity. The United Nations estimated that there were 316,600 living centenarians worldwide in 2012, and 573,000 in 2020, almost quadruple the 2000 estimate of 151,000. Despite being filmed in 1993, it premiered in 1995. Synopsis The film depicts model Christy Turlington and her friends Naomi Campbell, Yasmin Le Bon, Kate Moss, Helena Christensen, Gail Elliott and Carla Bruni as they jetted between Milan, Paris, and New York City during Spring 1994 Fashion Week. ''Unzipped'' is a 1995 American documentary film directed by Douglas Keeve. It follows fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi, Keeve's then boyfriend, as he plans and ultimately shows his fall 1994 collection. The film put such a rift in their relationship over Mizrahi's depiction that the two broke up over it. There are appearances by supermodels Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista and Kate Moss, as well as many other celebrities and designers from the fashion world and beyond. At the 1995 Sundance Film Festival, it won the Audience Award for U.S. Documentary, tied with '' Ballot Measure 9''.
