Political Spring
Political Spring ( el, Πολιτική Άνοιξη, ''Politiki Anixi'') was a Greek conservative political party founded in June 1993 by Antonis Samaras. The party was formed after Antonis Samaras broke away from the governing New Democracy party after being dismissed as Foreign Minister over his hardline stance on the Macedonia naming dispute. Political Spring gained 4.9% in the National Elections of 1993 earning ten seats in the Parliament. It gained 8.7% in the elections for the European Parliament in 1994 earning two seats. Its decline started in the National Elections of 1996, when it gained 2.94%, just below the national threshold of 3%, thus not being able to earn any seats in the Parliament. It participated in the elections for European Parliament in 1999, but it got 2.3% which was again below the threshold and considered a major failure leading to gradual dissolution of the party. Antonis Samaras
Antonis Samaras ( el, Αντώνης Σαμαράς, ; born 23 May 1951) is a Greek politician who served as 14th Prime Minister of Greece from 2012 to 2015. A member of the New Democracy party, he was its president from 2009 until 2015. Samaras started his national political career as Minister of Finance in 1989; he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1989 to 1992 (with a brief interruption in 1990) and Minister of Culture in 2009. Samaras was previously best known for a 1993 controversy in which he effectively caused the New Democracy government, of which he was a member, to fall from power. In spite of this, he rejoined the party in 2004 and was elected to its leadership in a closely fought intra-party election in late 2009. He was the seventh party leader since it was founded in 1974. European Parliament elections were held in Greece on 13 June 2004 to elect 24 Greek members of the European Parliament. Members were elected by party-list proportional representation with a 3% electoral threshold. Results The 2004 European election was the sixth election to the European Parliament. The ruling New Democracy party made strong gains, while the opposition PASOK made smaller gains, both at the expense of minor parties. European Parliament elections were held in Greece on 13 June 1999 to elect the 25 Greek members to the European Parliament. Members were elected by party-list proportional representation with a 3% threshold for any party. Results The 1999 European election was the fifth election to the European Parliament. The opposition conservative New Democracy party made gains as did the Communist Party of Greece, while the ruling PASOK lost ground. Two parties on the left, the relatively new Democratic Social Movement and the Coalition of the Left and Progress elected two MEPs each.
