Policoro
Policoro ( Lucano: ) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Matera, in the Southern Italian region of Basilicata. With some 18,000 inhabitants, is bounded by the towns of Rotondella, Scanzano Jonico and Tursi. Situated on the coast, its population swells in the summertime due to an influx of tourists who come to enjoy the Lido di Policoro. History The ruins of the ancient Heraclea (also Heracleia or Herakleia) are located in the modern comune of Policoro. The city of Heraclea was founded in 434 BC by colonists coming from Taras (present-day Taranto) and Thurii. In very little time, it became richer and more famous than the nearby town Siris. In 280 BCE, the Battle of Heraclea happened there during the war between Taranto and Rome. The Tables of Heraclea date back to this period and they are now located in the Archeology Museum of Naples. Tursi
Tursi (''Turse'' in Tursitano dialect; ; ) is an Italian ''comune'' of 4,712 inhabitants in the province of Matera in Basilicata, elevated to a city by decree of the President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi on May 4, 2006.D.P.R. May 4, 2006 – Resolution No. 2, prot. 1778, for the “Recognition of the Title of City to the City of Tursi, request under Article 18 of Legislative Decree No. 18/08/2000 No. 267 TUEL.” The municipality is home to the Basso Sinni mountain community. Dinu Adameșteanu
Dinu Adameșteanu ( Toporu, 25 March 1913 – Policoro, 2 January 2004) was a Romanian-Italian archaeologist, a pioneer and promoter of the use of aerial photography and aerial survey in archaeology. From 1958 to 1964, he was director of ''Aerofototeca'' for the Italian Ministry of Public Education, he was a professor of Etruscology, Italian antiquities, and the topography of ancient Italy at the University of Lecce. At the same university, he was also director of the Institute of Archaeology, of the Department of Scholarship on Antiquity, and of the school of classical and medieval archaeology. Domenico Pozzovivo
Domenico Pozzovivo (born 30 November 1982) is an Italian former road racing cyclist, who competed as a professional from 2005 to 2024. His very small stature confers him with the qualities of a pure climbing specialist. He is most known for a victory in stage 8 of the 2012 Giro d'Italia, an overall victory in the 2012 Giro del Trentino, and is notable for his educational attainments. Heraclea Lucania
Heraclea, also Heracleia or Herakleia (), was an ancient city. It was situated on the Gulf of Taranto between the rivers Aciris (modern Agri) and Siris (modern Sinni). Simone Zaza (born 25 June 1991) is an Italian professional footballer who plays as a striker. Zaza began his professional club career with Atalanta in 2008, where he remained for two seasons. Gianluca Vizziello (born 3 March 1980 in Policoro) is an Italian motorcycle racer. He currently competes in the CIV Supersport Championship aboard a Kawasaki ZX-6R. Career FIM Superstock 1000 Cup In 2000 Vizziello made his debut in the FIM Superstock 1000 Cup. He made four starts that season with a best finish of fifth at Oschersleben. Siris (Greek: ) was an ancient city of Magna Graecia (in modern Southern Italy), situated at the mouth of the river of the same name flowing into the Tarentine gulf, and now called the Sinni.
