Police Rapid Response Unit
The Police Special Intervention Unit (SIU) (; ), known as Special Intervention Unit Karhu, is a national police tactical unit in the Helsinki Police Department (HPD) of the Police of Finland. The unit's missions primarily involve apprehension of armed and dangerous criminals, hostage rescue crisis management, tactical law enforcement and special operations, counterterrorism, reconnaissance, executive and meeting venue protection, and crowd and riot control. The Helsinki Police Department (HPD) ( Finnish: Helsingin poliisilaitos) is the department of the Police of Finland in charge of the Finnish capital of Helsinki. Kauhajoki School Shooting
The Kauhajoki school shooting occurred on 23 September 2008 at the Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences (SeAMK) in Kauhajoki, Finland. The gunman, 22-year-old student Matti Juhani Saari, shot and killed ten people with a Walther P22 Target semi-automatic pistol, before shooting himself in the head. He died a few hours later at Tampere University Hospital. One woman was injured but remained in stable condition. 2017 Turku Stabbing
The 2017 Turku attack occurred on 18 August 2017 at around 16:02–16:05 (UTC+3) when 10 people were stabbed in central Turku, Southwest Finland. Two women were killed in the attack and eight people sustained injuries. Police were informed at 16:02. Three minutes later the attacker, Abderrahman Bouanane, a Moroccan rejected asylum seeker, had been detained. At the time of his arrest, Bouanane was using the name Abderrahman Mechkah, which was later discovered to be a false identity. In June 2018, Bouanane was found guilty of two counts of murder with terrorist intent and eight counts of attempted murder with terrorist intent. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.
