Polaris
Polaris is a star in the northern circumpolar constellation of Ursa Minor. It is designated α Ursae Minoris ( Latinized to ''Alpha Ursae Minoris'') and is commonly called the North Star or Pole Star. With an apparent magnitude that fluctuates around 1.98, it is the brightest star in the constellation and is readily visible to the naked eye at night. The position of the star lies less than 1° away from the north celestial pole, making it the current northern pole star. The stable position of the star in the Northern Sky makes it useful for navigation. As the closest Cepheid variable its distance is used as part of the cosmic distance ladder. Polaris (American Band)
Polaris is an American independent rock band that was formed as a one-off musical project in the early 1990s, involving members of the New Haven indie rock band Miracle Legion. They were commissioned specifically to produce music for the Nickelodeon television show ''The Adventures of Pete & Pete'', which was later compiled into the group's first and only album. Nearly twenty years after the show was cancelled, Polaris reemerged with its first tour and a cassingle of two new songs. History Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi, the show-runners of ''The Adventures of Pete & Pete'', were fans of Miracle Legion and approached the band to write original music for the series. ''Simple Things'' is the debut studio album by Zero 7, released on 23 April 2001. It peaked at number 28 on the UK Albums Chart, staying on the chart for 56 weeks. It was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Critical reception Tim DiGravina of AllMusic gave the album 4 stars out of 5, calling it "an accomplished slice of soulful genius that rewards frequent spins." He said, "the duo of Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker mix a number of musical elements, such as soul-influenced diva vocals, gurgling and ringing keyboards, and classical string arrangements, into a relaxing, potent wave of sounds." Matt Diehl of ''Rolling Stone'' gave the album 3.5 stars out of 5, saying, "More like jazz on acid than acid jazz, ''Simple Things'' can be hallucinatory yet eminently listenable; it's chill-out music with a little something for your mind as well." ''Nocturne'' is the debut studio album by American metal band The Human Abstract. It was recorded at The Basement in Rural Hall, North Carolina and Trax East in South River, New Jersey. On the band's MySpace page, as well as in the ''Metal=Life'' compilation CD, the last 30 or so seconds of "Desiderata" are included as part of the intro to "Vela, Together We Await the Storm". ''Rust in Peace'' is the fourth studio album by American thrash metal band Megadeth, released on September 24, 1990 by Capitol Records. ''Futures'' is the fifth studio album by American rock band Jimmy Eat World, released on October 19, 2004, through Interscope Records. After touring in support of ''Bleed American'' (2001) for two years, the band returned home and began working on new material by mid-2003. Following fruitless sessions with producer Mark Trombino, the band re-grouped and recorded with Gil Norton. The sessions lasted from February to May 2004 and were held at various studios in California and Arizona. "Polaris" is the second single from the album Twilight of the Innocents by the band Ash (band), Ash. It was released on 15 June 2007 in Republic of Ireland, Ireland and the United Kingdom, and in the United States on 18 June 2007. It reached number 32 in the UK singles chart, and as of 2022 remains their last single to have reached the UK top 40 singles chart. The band released the video for the song to their YouTube profile on 26 May. B-side "Chinese New Year" first featured as an acoustic version in the Ash road-movie, "Episode 1: Road Movie" and can be found on the DVD format of "Burn Baby Burn".
