Pokesdown Urban District was a short-lived urban district in Hampshire (now Dorset), England. It was created in 1895 and was abolished in 1901 when it was absorbed into the County Borough of Bournemouth. Urban District (Great Britain And Ireland)
In England and Wales, an urban district was a type of local government district that covered an urbanised area. Urban districts had an elected urban district council (UDC), which shared local government responsibilities with a county council. In England and Wales, urban districts and rural districts were created in 1894 by the Local Government Act 1894 ( 56 & 57 Vict. c. 73) as subdivisions of administrative counties. A similar model of urban and rural districts was also established in Ireland in 1899, which continued separately in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland after 1921. They replaced the earlier system of urban and rural sanitary districts (based on poor law unions) whose functions were taken over by the district councils. Pokesdown
Pokesdown is a suburb of Bournemouth, in the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole districts, in the ceremonial county of Dorset, England. It lies just east of Boscombe and west of Southbourne, Dorset, Southbourne. History It is believed that Pokesdown took its name from the Old English word Pucca, which referred to a type of mischievous Sprite (folklore), sprite. Evidence of human occupation in the area dates back to the Bronze Age. In 1909 when Lock's Field was being developed into what is now Hillbrow Road, Herbert Druitt of Christchurch obtained permission from the owner, Mr. F. Elcock, to excavate two barrows on the site, and a notable Bronze Age cremation cemetery was found. A number of urns were recovered, some of which were sent to the British Museum. In 1926 more urns were found around Harewood Avenue, and between Lascelles Road and Kings Park, Boscombe, Kings Park entrance. County Borough Of Bournemouth
Bournemouth ( ) is a coastal resort town in the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole unitary authority area, in the ceremonial county of Dorset, England. At the 2021 census, the built-up area had a population of 196,455, making it the largest town in Dorset. Previously an uninhabited heathland, visited only by occasional fishermen and smugglers, a health resort was founded in the area by Lewis Tregonwell in 1810. After the Ringwood, Christchurch and Bournemouth Railway opened in 1870, it grew into an important resort town which attracts over five million visitors annually to the town's beaches and nightlife. Urban district (England and Wales), Urban districts were a form of local government in England and Wales between 1894 and 1974, typically used for smaller and medium sized towns. They were created on 31 December 1894 under the Local Government Act 1894 (56 & 57 Vict. c. 73). The vast majority of urban districts formed at that time were created by renaming the pre-existing Sanitary district, urban sanitary districts, such as Local board of health, local board districts or Improvement commissioners, improvement commissioners districts. Only a minority of the urban districts created in 1894 were for places that had not previously had urban forms of local government. The history of Bournemouth and human settlement in the surrounding area goes back for thousands of years. Bournemouth is a coastal town on the island of Great Britain in Dorset, England, United Kingdom. Before Inclosure In 1800, the area was largely a remote and barren heathland, used only by smugglers – most notably Isaac Gulliver, now considered one of the founding fathers of Bournemouth – and revenue troops. 'Bourne Heath' was also known as Wallis Down in the north and Little Down in the south and east, and was part of the Great Heath of central Dorset which extended as far as Dorchester.
