Poker is a family of comparing card games in which players wager over which hand is best according to that specific game's rules. It is played worldwide, with varying rules in different places. Poch
Poch, Pochen or Pochspiel () is a very old card game that is considered one of the forerunners of poker, a game that developed in America in the 19th century. An etymological relationship between the game names is also assumed. Games related to Poch are the French ''Glic'' and ''Nain Jaune'' and the English Pope Joan (card game), Pope Joan. Other forerunners of poker and possible relatives of the game are the English game, Three-card brag, Brag, from the 16th century and the French Brelan (later Bouillotte) and Belle, Flux et Trente-et-Un. Poch is recorded as early as 1441 in Strasbourg. In north Germany it was called by the Low German name of Puchen or Puchspill, and the board was a ''Puchbrett''. Button (poker)
In poker, the buck or dealer button is a marker used to indicate the player who is dealing or, in casino games with a house dealer, the player who acts last on that deal (who would be the dealer in a home game). The term button is also used for a variety of plastic discs, or lammers, used by casinos to mark the status of players. A poker dealer distributes cards to players and manages the action at a poker table. Professional dealers Any casino with a poker room must hire a staff of dealers. Casinos generally pay dealers minimum wage. However, a dealer's primary source of income is not salary, but tips from players. In poker, players form sets of five playing cards, called ''hands'', according to the rules of the game. The poker boom was a period between 2003 and 2006, during which poker, primarily no-limit Texas hold 'em, but also other variations, became considerably more popular around the world. However, viewership has been declining dramatically in recent years, due to laws that restricted online play in the United States. Seven-card Stud
Seven-card stud, also known as Seven-Toed Pete or Down-The-River, is a variant of stud poker. Before the 2000s surge of popularity of Texas hold 'em, seven-card stud was one of the most widely played poker variants in home games across the United States and in casinos in the eastern part of the country. Although seven-card stud is not as common in casinos today, it is still played online. The game is commonly played with two to eight players; however, eight may require special rules for the last cards dealt if no players fold. Playing with nine players is possible. In casino play, it is common to use a small ante and bring-in. In home games, using only an ante is typical. Seven-card stud is the "S" game in HORSE and similar mixed game formats. Joseph Cowell
Joseph Leathley Cowell (né Hawkins-Witshed; 7 August 179213 November 1863) was an English actor, author, and painter. Early life Cowell was born Joseph Leathley Hawkins-Witshed not far from Torquay in Devon. His father had been a colonel in the army, and his uncle was Admiral James Hawkins-Whitshed. Cowell entered the navy at the age of 13, served three years as a midshipman, and then embarked on a year-long cruise to the West Indies. In a quarrel, he struck a superior officer, thus rendering himself liable to a court-martial, with the probability of being shot. On the voyage home, his ship encountered a French ship and he begged to be allowed to lose his life honorably in action.
