Pointed Heels
''Pointed Heels'' is a 1929 American pre-Code early sound musical comedy film from Paramount Pictures that was directed by A. Edward Sutherland and starring William Powell, Helen Kane, Richard "Skeets" Gallagher, and Fay Wray. This film was originally filmed in color sequences by Technicolor, but today those color sequences only survive in black-and-white. One of these color sequences was the "Pointed Heels" ballet with Albertina Rasch and her Dancers. The UCLA Film and Television Archive has a complete copy of this film with all color sequences, but has not released it to anyone. Turner Classic Movies airs the black-and-white television copy of this film. A print screened at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles in 2009 contained the color ballet sequence. Universal owns the copyright and has not allowed a release of the restored version. Albertina Rasch
Albertina Rasch (January 19, 1891 – October 2, 1967) was an Austrian-American dancer, company director, and choreographer. Early life Rasch was born in 1891 (although she would later shave five years off her age), in Vienna (in what was then Austria-Hungary), to a family of Polish Jewish descent. She grew up studying in an imperial dancing school, the Vienna State Opera House, and "worked her way up to the position of ballerina through that institution." Career Rasch began performing before the age of fourteen. During the American “dance craze” of the 1910s, she left Vienna for the United States, appearing in shows at the New York Hippodrome, also known as “the National Amusement Institution of America” and the Winter Garden. Virginia Bruce (born Helen Virginia Briggs; September 29, 1910 – February 24, 1982) was an American actress and singer. Early life Bruce was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As an infant she moved with her parents, Earil and Margaret Briggs, to Fargo, North Dakota. The city directory of Fargo documents that the Briggs family lived there at 421 14th Street South. After Bruce graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1928, she moved with her family to Los Angeles intending to enroll at the University of California, Los Angeles when a friendly wager sent her seeking film work. Adrienne Dore (born Elizabeth Himmelsbach; May 22, 1907 – November 26, 1992) was an American actress, model (profession), model, and beauty pageant winner. She was first runner-up in the Miss America 1925 pageant, competing as Miss California, Miss Los Angeles. Dore went on to have a modest career in motion pictures before retiring in 1934. Eugene William Pallette (July 8, 1889 – September 3, 1954) was an American actor who worked in both the silent and sound eras, performing in more than 240 productions between 1913 and 1946.
