The poet laureate of Utah is the poet laureate for the U.S. state of Utah. The Utah State Poet Laureate Program was established in 1997. As a joint project of the governor's office and the Utah Arts Council Literature Program, the governor appoints the Utah poet laureate for a five-year term. Utah
Utah is a landlocked state in the Mountain states, Mountain West subregion of the Western United States. It is one of the Four Corners states, sharing a border with Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico. The governor of Utah is the head of government of UtahUT Const. art. VII, § 5 and the commander-in-chief of its Utah National Guard, military forces. The governor has a duty to enforce state laws as well as the power to either approve or veto bills passed by the Utah State Legislature, Utah Legislature. Utah Division Of Arts And Museums
The Utah Division of Arts & Museums is a state government agency responsible for the promotion of arts and museums in Utah. It is a division of the Utah Department of Heritage and Arts. It includes the Utah Office of Museum Services and the Utah Arts Council as advisory and policy-making boards. The Division's primary offices, as well as its arts education and literary arts programs, are located in the Glendinning Home, next to the Governor's Mansion in Salt Lake City. Its folk arts and museum services programs are housed in the Chase Home Museum of Utah Folk Arts. David Lee (poet)
David Lee (born 1944) is an American poet and the first poet laureate of the state of Utah. His 1999 collection ''News From Down to the Café'' was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and, in 2001, he was a finalist for the position of United States Poet Laureate. He has been acclaimed by the Utah Endowment for the Humanities as one of the twelve greatest writers to ever emerge from the state. A former farmer, he is the subject of the PBS documentary ''The Pig Poet.'' His poems have appeared widely in publications including ''Poetry'', ''Ploughshares'', '' The Missouri Review'', ''Narrative Magazine'', and ''JuxtaProse Literary Magazine''. He has been cited as an influence on writers such as Lance Larsen and Bonnie Jo Campbell. Ken Brewer
Kenneth Wayne Brewer (November 28, 1941 – March 15, 2006) was an American poet and longtime scholar who resided in Utah, where he served as Poet Laureate. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, he attended Butler University and Western New Mexico University in the 1960s, then earned a master's degree in English literature from New Mexico State University, followed by a Ph.D. from the University of Utah, where he worked with Pulitzer Prize winner Henry Taylor, in 1973. Since that time he taught a wide variety of courses at Utah State University, concentrating on mentoring creative writers at the graduate level, while publishing prolifically and speaking extensively. He died after a nine-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Katharine Coles
Katharine Coles is an American poet and educator. She served from 2006 to 2012 as Utah's third poet laureate and currently serves as the inaugural director of the Harriet Monroe Poetry Institute and the co-director of the Utah Symposium in Science and Literature. Biography Coles earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Washington. She later earned a master's degree from the University of Houston and her Ph.D. from the University of Utah. In 1997 she joined the faculty at the University of Utah. Her published works include the novels ''Fire Season'' and ''The Measurable World'', and five collections of poems: ''Fault'', ''The Golden Years of the Fourth Dimension'', ''A History of the Garden'', ''The One Right Touch'', and ''Flight''. Lance Larsen (born 1961 in Pocatello, Idaho) is an American poet. He served as poet laureate of Utah from 2012 to 2017. In 2007, he received the Literature Fellowship in Poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts.
