Podivín
Podivín () is a town in Břeclav District in the South Moravian Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 2,900 inhabitants. Geography Podivín is located about north of Břeclav and southeast of Brno. It lies in a flat agricultural landscape in the Lower Morava Valley. The Thaya River flows through the southern part of the municipal territory. The Trkmanka River flows along the western border and then joins the Thaya. History The first written mention of Podivín is in '' Chronica Boemorum'' and is related to the years 1062–1067. From the 1520s until their expulsion in 1622, the Anabaptist community existed in the town. The Jewish community was first documented in 1619, when there was 140 Jews. Vit Klemes (born Vít Klemeš; 30 April 1932, Podivín – 8 March 2010) was a Canadian hydrologist of Czech origin. Biography Klemes received a Civil Engineering degree (Ing) from the Brno University of Technology, a CSc degree (a local equivalent of PhD) in hydrology and water resources from the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava and a DrSc degree from the Czech Technical University in Prague. Following the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia, Klemes and his family came to Canada in September 1968. There he obtained a position of associate professor at the University of Toronto, first in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and later in the Institute of Environmental Sciences and Engineering. The ''Chronica Boemorum'' (Chronicle of the Czechs, or Bohemians) is the first Latin chronicle in which the history of the Czech lands has been consistently and relatively fully described. It was written in 1119–1125 by Cosmas of Prague. The manuscript includes information about historical events in Czech land from ancient times to the first quarter of the 12th century.
