''Podilymbus wetmorei'' is an extinct species of grebe recovered from the Late Pleistocene age of the United States. History The holotype was collected on March 2, 1957 by American ornithologist and paleontologist Pierce Brodkorb. The holotype and referred material would later be described by the American ornithologist Robert W. Storer. The species name "wetmorei" is in honor of the late American ornithologist and avian paleontologist Alexander Wetmore. Description The holotype (UF/PB 1762) of ''P. wetmorei'' is of a left tarsometatarsus. The holotype differs from other species of ''Podilymbus'' for the tarsometatarsus being wider and heavier. The overall dimensions, however, is similar to pied-billed grebe (''P. podiceps''). In comparison to '' P. majusculus'' the tarsometatarsus shorter and wider. Grebes () are aquatic diving birds in the order (biology), order Podicipediformes (). Grebes are widely distributed freshwater birds, with some species also found in sea, marine habitats during Bird migration, migration and winter. The Late Pleistocene is an unofficial Age (geology), age in the international geologic timescale in chronostratigraphy, also known as the Upper Pleistocene from a Stratigraphy, stratigraphic perspective. Pierce Brodkorb
William Pierce Brodkorb (September 29, 1908, Chicago – July 18, 1992, Gainesville, Florida) was an American ornithologist and paleontologist. Interested in birds since childhood, he was taught to prepare birds at the age of 16. Later, he received the opportunity to work as a staff technician in the Ornithology Division of the Field Museum. He entered the University of Michigan in 1933 and obtained his PhD degree in 1936. Subsequently, he became an assistant curator of birds at the Museum of Zoology in Michigan until 1946. In 1946, he accepted a professorate in the Department of Zoology at the University of Florida in Gainesville, a position he held until his retirement in 1989. His doctoral students include Glen E. Woolfenden. Alexander Wetmore
Frank Alexander Wetmore (June 18, 1886 – December 7, 1978) was an American ornithologist and avian paleontologist. He was the sixth Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. He was also an elected member of both the American Philosophical Society and the United States National Academy of Sciences. Early life and education The son of a physician, Frank Alexander Wetmore was born in North Freedom, Wisconsin. Developing an interest in birds at an early age, he made his first field journal entry (a pelican seen while on vacation in 1894) at the age of eight. The tarsometatarsus is a bone that is only found in the lower leg of birds and some non-avian dinosaurs. It is formed from the fusion of several bird bones found in other types of animals, and homologous to the mammalian tarsus (ankle bones) and metatarsal bones (foot). Despite this, the tarsometatarsus of flying types is often referred to as just the shank, tarsus or metatarsus. Tarsometatarsal fusion occurred in several ways and extents throughout bird evolution. ''Podilymbus majusculus'' is an extinct species of grebe recovered from the Piacenzian age of the United States. History The specimens were collected in the summer of 1965 from Idaho, United States by Claude W. Hibbard and the species was named in 1967 by Bertram G. Murray. The species name "majusculus" is Latin for "somewhat larger or greater", referring to the larger size of the species compared to the related pied-billed grebe (''P. podiceps''). Description The holotype material is a complete tarsometatarsus ( UMMP 52470). The tarsometatarsus is similar in characteristic to the pied-billed grebe, but being larger in size. Atitlán Grebe
The Atitlán grebe (''Podilymbus gigas''), also known as giant grebe, giant pied-billed grebe, or poc, is an extinct water bird, a relative of the pied-billed grebe. It was endemic at the Lago de Atitlán in Guatemala at an altitude of 1700 m asl. It was described in 1929 by Ludlow Griscom based on a specimen collected in 1926 and had been overlooked in the past. American ecologist Anne LaBastille observed the decline of this species over a period of 25 years. It was declared extinct by 1990. Description The Atitlán grebe reached a length of about 46–50 cm.
