Po Toi Lighthouse
Po Toi Lighthouse, also known as Nam Kok Tsui lighthouse or Lighthouse 126, is an active light on Po Toi, the main island of the Po Toi Islands group, Hong Kong. Retrieved 2016-06-03 The light was constructed and lit in 1970. The structure is a concrete equipment building with gallery and a light on the top. Located on the top of a hill, on the southeast side of a pointed peninsula along the "Po Toi Country Trail", there is a long flight of stairs with a railing leading to the top, it is the southernmost lighthouse in Hong Kong. New Territories
The New Territories is one of the three main regions of Hong Kong, alongside Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon Peninsula. It makes up 86.2% of Hong Kong's territory, and contains around half of the population of Hong Kong. Historically, it is the region described in the Convention for the Extension of Hong Kong Territory. According to that treaty, the territories comprise the mainland area north of Boundary Street on the Kowloon Peninsula and south of the Sham Chun River (which is the border between Hong Kong and Mainland China), as well as over 200 outlying islands, including Lantau Island, Lamma Island, Cheung Chau, and Peng Chau in the territory of HK. Po Toi
Po Toi (commonly , originally ) is the main island of the Po Toi Islands and the southernmost island of Hong Kong, with an area of 3.69 km². Name It is said that the island used to produce dried seaweeds (), which were shaped like the cattail hassock () used by the monks for sitting; therefore the island was originally called 蒲苔島, the present common name being a corruption. Another explanation states that Po Toi looks like a floating platform () when viewed from a distance on sea. 蒲 is another character meaning "to float" in the local dialect, thus giving the island its name. History The island historically had a maximum of about 1,000 fishermen and farmers, whose economic activity consisted mainly of fishing, farming and seaweed harvesting. The Po Toi Islands are a small group of islands with a population of around 200, south-east of Hong Kong Island, off Stanley, Hong Kong, Stanley, in Hong Kong. The main island of the group is Po Toi, Po Toi Island. Administratively, they are part of Islands District. The islands are notable for interesting rock formations and open-air seafood restaurants. Lighthouses in Mainland China Lighthouses in Hong Kong Following the establishment of British Hong Kong as a trade port in 1841, the first lighthouses in Hong Kong were planned and built to assist international navigation. The first lighthouse to enter service was Cape D'Aguilar Lighthouse in April 1875, which was operated by lighthouse keepers who received specialist training in London and lived in the lighthouse in one-month shifts. As of 2017, five lighthouse structures in Hong Kong that date from before the Second World War remain in operation: Cape D'Aguilar, Green Island (two lighthouses), Waglan, and Tang Lung Chau.
