Plucheeae
Plucheeae, sometimes also spelt as Plucheae, is a tribe of flowering plants in the subfamily Asteroideae. Genera This tribe was created by A. Anderberg (1989) following his reclassification of the Inuleae (Cass.) tribe. It includes the following genera: *''Cylindrocline'' *''Pluchea'' *''Porphyrostemma'' *''Pterocaulon'' *'' Rhodogeron'' *'' Sachsia'' *''Sphaeranthus'' *''Streptoglossa ''Streptoglossa'' is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae and is endemic to Australia. Anderberg's molecular data from 2005 does not support the monophyly of a tribe defined in this way. His 2005 classification does not recognize Plucheeae, but includes it in the Inuleae. This classification does include a subtribe Plucheinae in the Inuleae, but this subtribe contains a number of species from the former Inuleae as well as all th ... Asteroideae
Asteroideae is a subfamily of the plant family Asteraceae. It contains about 70% of the species of the family. It consists of several tribes, including Astereae, Calenduleae, Eupatorieae, Gnaphalieae, Heliantheae, Senecioneae and Tageteae. Asteroideae contains plants found all over the world, many of which are shrubby. There are about 1,135 genera and 17,200 species within this subfamily; the largest genera by number of species are ''Helichrysum'' (500–600) and '' Artemisia'' (550). Asteroideae is said to date back to approximately 46–36.5 million years ago. Common characteristics This family will often have radiate style heads but some could have discoid or disciform. They contain ray florets that are three lobed and are also considered perfect flower implying that it is bisexual. Many contain stigmatic surfaces that are separated by two marginal bands and terminal sterile appendages with sweeping hairs. Taxonomy This subfamily is composed of 21 tribes that are broken ... Pluchea
''Pluchea'' is a genus of flowering plants in the tribe Inuleae within the family Asteraceae. Members of this genus might be known as camphorweeds, plucheas, or less uniquely fleabanes. Some, such as ''P. carolinensis'' and ''P. odorata'', are called sourbushes. There are plants of many forms, from annual and perennial herbs to shrubs and trees, and there is variation in the morphology of leaves, flowers, and fruits.Perera, W., et al. (2007)Flavonols from leaves of ''Pluchea carolinensis'' (Jacq.) G.Don (Asteraceae).''Revista Latinoamericana de Química'' 35(3), 68-73. Monophyly
In cladistics for a group of organisms, monophyly is the condition of being a clade—that is, a group of taxa composed only of a common ancestor (or more precisely an ancestral population) and all of its lineal descendants. Monophyletic groups are typically characterised by shared derived characteristics (synapomorphies), which distinguish organisms in the clade from other organisms. An equivalent term is holophyly. The word "mono-phyly" means "one-tribe" in Greek. Monophyly is contrasted with paraphyly and polyphyly as shown in the second diagram. A ''paraphyletic group'' consists of all of the descendants of a common ancestor minus one or more monophyletic groups. A '' polyphyletic group'' is characterized by convergent features or habits of scientific interest (for example, night-active primates, fruit trees, aquatic insects). The features by which a polyphyletic group is differentiated from others are not inherited from a common ancestor. These definitions have take ... Streptoglossa
''Streptoglossa'' is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae and is endemic to Australia. Plants in the genus ''Streptoglossa'' are aromatic herbs or shrubs with simple leaves, composite flowerheads with 15 to more than 100 fertile florets, the outer florets female and the disc florets bisexual. Description Plants in the genus ''Streptoglossa'' are shrubs, or annual or perennial herbs, often aromatic, with simple, often glandular leaves. The daisy-like flowers are pink to purple and have 15 to 100 or more fertile florets, the outer florets female with a lobed ligule, and the disc florets bisexual and tube-shaped. There are 3 to 6 rows of overlapping involucral bracts at the base of the heads. The fruit is a hairy achene, the pappus with many barbed or feathery bristles. Taxonomy The genus ''Streptoglossa'' was first formally described by Joachim Steetz, but published in 1863 by Ferdinand von Mueller in the ''Edinburgh New Philosophical Journal''. George Bentham
George Bentham (22 September 1800 – 10 September 1884) was an English botanist, described by the weed botanist Duane Isely as "the premier systematic botanist of the nineteenth century". Born into a distinguished family, he initially studied law, but had a fascination with botany from an early age, which he soon pursued, becoming president of the Linnaean Society in 1861, and a fellow of the Royal Society in 1862. He was the author of a number of important botanical works, particularly flora. He is best known for his taxonomic classification of plants in collaboration with Joseph Dalton Hooker, his ''Genera Plantarum'' (1862–1883). He died in London in 1884.
