Plestia Alaqad
Plestia Alaqad ( ar, بلستيا العقاد; born 10 December 2001) is a Palestinian journalist and poet. She gained international attention for her daily coverage of the Israel–Hamas war, which began on 7 October 2023, by way of her social media accounts. In November 2023, as the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip intensified, Alaqad and her family fled to Egypt and then to Australia, where she has continued her advocacy on the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. She currently resides in the city of Melbourne. Early life and education Alaqad was born on 10 December 2001 and grew up in the Gaza Strip. She attended the American International School in the city of Beit Lahia, and later enrolled at Eastern Mediterranean University in what is Northern Cyprus to study New Media and Journalism, graduating in 2022. Bankstown Poetry Slam
The Bankstown Poetry Slam is the largest regular poetry slam in Australia. History The Bankstown Poetry Slam (BPS) was founded in 2013 by Sara Mansour and Ahmad Al Rady, and held in the southwest Sydney suburb of Bankstown. Since its inception, the poetry slam has featured notable poets such as Omar Musa, Luka LessonJazz Money Rupi Kaur and Rudy Francisco. It has held grand slams at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney Town Hall, and The Sydney ICC. The Bankstown Poetry Slam is currently run by Sara Mansour, Story Factory, Bilal Hafda, and Yasmine Lewis. In 2018, security guards were hired for the event after comments from Australian politician Mark Latham incited online threats and abuse against attendees. Rafah Border Crossing
The Rafah Border Crossing ( ar, معبر رفح, Ma`bar Rafaḥ) or Rafah Crossing Point is the sole crossing point between Egypt and the Gaza Strip. It is located on the Gaza–Egypt border, which was recognized by the 1979 Egypt–Israel peace treaty. The original crossing point was named Rafah land port. Only passage of persons takes place through the Rafah Border Crossing. Traffic of goods is mostly diverted to the Kerem Shalom border crossing.
