The locality was a town until 1950. It is located in the western part of the county, at a distance of from the county seat, Craiova, and from the Danube, on the border with Mehedinți County. Nicolae Ciucă
Nicolae Ionel Ciucă (; born 22 September 1967) is a Romanian politician and retired general of the Romanian Land Forces. Ideologically a conservative, he served as Prime Minister of Romania between 25 November 2021 and 12 June 2023 after receiving widespread parliamentary support on behalf of his own party, the National Liberal Party (PNL) along with the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR/RMDSZ). Since 10 April 2022, he has also been serving as the president of the National Liberal Party (PNL). On 12 June 2023, he resigned as prime minister, as part of a deal with his coalition partner, the PSD, to switch places with Marcel Ciolacu, and was temporarily replaced by Cătălin Predoiu. Vintilă Ciocâlteu
Vintilă Ciocâlteu (; April 12, 1890 – February 3, 1947) was a Romanian physician, researcher, professor, and author. Biography He was born in Plenița, Dolj County, Romania, the son of the teacher Mihai Ciocâlteu. He attended high school in Craiova, and he graduated the Faculty of Medicine of Bucharest in 1920. Ciocâlteu distinguished himself throughout medical school and was active in the leadership of the student association. Due to his brilliant academic results, he was selected as the recipient of a Rockefeller grant to further his studies at Harvard Medical School in the United States. There, in collaboration with Otto Folin he co-developed the chemical reactive known as the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent (FCR). He returned to Romania as a professor at the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, where he laid the foundation of the biochemistry lab.
