Plaza Sugbu
Plaza Sugbu, formerly known as Plaza Rizal, is a public square in Cebu City, Philippines. The square connects the Magellan's Cross kiosk and the Cebu City Hall. The square was inaugurated in 2008 by Philippine president Gloria Arroyo. Magellan's Cross Pavilion
Magellan's Cross Pavilion is a stone kiosk in Cebu City, Philippines. The structure is situated on Plaza Sugbo beside the Basilica del Santo Niño. It houses a Christian cross that was planted by explorers of the Spanish expedition of the first circumnavigation of the world, led by Ferdinand Magellan, upon arriving in Cebu in the Philippines on April 21, 1521. Along with the Basilica del Santo Niño's church and convent buildings, the pavilion is a declared National Cultural Treasure of the Philippines. Background Pavilion The Magellan's Cross Pavilion which houses the tindalo cross was built sometime in the 1834 under Spanish colonial rule. The structure is octagonal kiosk made of coral stone. The pavilion and the tindalo cross itself sustained cracks due to the 2013 Bohol earthquake. The original cross was also found to have deteriorated due to termites in 2015. The Cebu City Hall is the official seat of government of the City of Cebu, located in Barangay Santo Niño, Cebu City, Philippines. Composed of two buildings namely the Executive Building and the Legislative Building, it is where the Mayor of Cebu City holds office and houses the Cebu City Council. José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda (, ; June 19, 1861 – December 30, 1896) was a Filipino nationalist, writer and polymath active at the end of the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. Vicente Rama (June 6, 1887 – December 24, 1956) was a Filipino Visayan legislator, publisher, and writer from Cebu, Philippines. Recognized as the Father of Cebu City, he authored the bill for its cityhood which was approved into law by October 20, 1936. He also founded the leading pre-war Cebuano periodical, '' Bag-ong Kusog''. Early life Vicente Rama, also known with the honorific title, Don Vicente and Nyor Inting, was born in Cebu, Philippines on June 6, 1887. He was the eldest child of Gabriel "Abi" Raffiñan y Buzón and Engilberta "Iya Bita" Ramas y Enguio, who was the child of Laurente Ramas and Juana Enguio from Naga.
