Platypezidae
Platypezidae is a family (biology), family of Fly, true flies of the Taxonomic rank, superfamily Platypezoidea. The more than 250 species are Cosmopolitan distribution, found worldwide primarily in woodland habitats. A common name is flat-footed flies, but this is also used for the closely related Opetiidae which were formerly included in the Platypezidae. Some genera formerly included here have been recognized as entirely unrelated, and now placed in the Asilomorpha, asilomorph family Atelestidae. Description For terms see Morphology of Diptera. Platypezidae are minute to medium sized (1.5–6 mm) slender or robust flies. The male and female usually differ in colour. Males in particular are often all black, one or both sexes may be in part or all grey or yellow. Markings may be orange, grey or silver. The abdomen may have two colours. Males have holoptic eyes. The antenna has three segments, the third is the largest and bears a long, apical arista. The wing is clear or ... Opetiidae
The Opetiidae is a family of true flies of the superfamily Platypezoidea, one of two families commonly called flat-footed flies. The family contains only five extant species in two genera, '' Opetia'' from the Palearctic region and '' Puyehuemyia'' from Chile in South America. Several fossil genera have been assigned to the family, but many of these are likely to belong elsewhere in the Platypezoidea. '' Lonchopterites'' from the Early Cretaceous Lebanese amber and '' Electrosania'' from the Late Cretaceous New Jersey amber seem likely to be closely related to modern opetiids. Family description Se Classification Opetiidae was formerly in Platypezidae. *†'' Lithopetia'' Zhang, 1987 **†'' Lithopetia hirsuta'' Zhang, 1987 *'' Opetia'' Meigen, 1830 Palearctic, Oligocene The Oligocene ( ) is a geologic epoch (geology), epoch of the Paleogene Geologic time scale, Period that extends from about 33.9 million to 23 million years before the present ( to ). Polyporivora Picta
''Polyporivora picta'' is a species of flat-footed flies in the family Platypezidae. It is found throughout Northern and Central Europe. Morphology Like almost all members of its family, ''P. picta'' displays a strong sexual dimorphism. Females are grey and black whereas males are entirely black with eyes touching in the center of the head. Females can be differentiated from the very similar ''P. ornata'' through their black scutellum (grey on ''P. ornata''). Another important characteristic for identification is wing venation. Ecology ''P. picta'' is a parasite in its larval stage and can only be found in and around forests in which its host, ''Trametes versicolor'', grows. The adult flies fly from September until October. During these months they can be seen running in chaotic zig-zag-lines on leaves of various plants. They lay their eggs on fruiting bodies of ''T. versicolor'' which serve as food and shelter for the larvae. Up to 40 individuals have been reported in a single ...
