Platismatia Tuckermanii
''Platismatia tuckermanii'' is a species of corticolous (bark-dwelling), foliose lichen in the family Parmeliaceae. It was first formally described as a species of ''Cetraria'' in 1843 by American botanist William Oakes. The species epithet honours lichenologist Edward Tuckerman, who collected the type specimen in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1838. William and Chicita Culberson transferred the taxon to the genus ''Platismatia'' in 1968. The lichen is found in Canada and the Southeastern United States. William Oakes (botanist)
William Oakes (July 1, 1799-July 31, 1848) was an American botanist. William Oakes was born on July 1, 1799. He attended Harvard from 1816 and developed an interest in natural history under the guidance of his tutor, William Dandridge Peck. After graduation in 1820, Oakes studied law and then, from 1824, began a legal practice in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Oakes was among the first travelers on a path to the summit of Mount Washington, New Hampshire that had been constructed in 1821 by the pioneering Ethan Crawford. He came to know Crawford well during his numerous subsequent visits to the White Mountains in which Mount Washington lies. Oakes Gulf in the mountains is named after him. Oakes eventually gave up law to pursue full-time his interest in natural history. He was asked to contribute a description of White Mountains flora to a geological survey report in 1842 and thereafter spent much time on the project. Chicita Culberson
Chicita Frances Culberson (born Chicita Frances Forman, November 1, 1931 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) is an American lichenologist. Education She graduated with a B.S. from the University of Cincinnati in 1953, where she also met her future husband, Bill Culberson. In 1954, Received an M.S. from the University of Wisconsin in 1954 and in 1959 received a Ph.D. from Duke University. Career A botanical researcher at Duke University, Culberson pioneered the use of thin-layer chromatography in the identification of secondary lichen products. In 1992, she became one of the first modern recipients of the Acharius Medal. In 2000, botanist Theodore Esslinger circumscribed ''Culbersonia'', which is a fungal genus in the family Caliciaceae and named in Bill Culberson and Chicita F. Lichen Product
Lichen products, also known as lichen substances, are organic compounds produced by a lichen. Specifically, they are secondary metabolites. Lichen products are represented in several different chemical classes, including terpenoids, orcinol derivatives, chromones, xanthones, depsides, and depsidones. Over 800 lichen products of known chemical structure have been reported in the scientific literature, and most of these compound are exclusively found in lichens. Examples of lichen products include usnic acid (a dibenzofuran), atranorin (a depside), lichexanthone (a xanthone), salazinic acid (a depsidone), and isolichenan, an α-glucan. William Louis Culberson
William Louis "Bill" Culberson (April 5, 1929 in Indianapolis, Indiana – February 8, 2003 in Durham, North Carolina) was an American lichenologist. Professional history Culberson earned his bachelor's degree at the University of Cincinnati, where he was influenced by E. Lucy Braun; he subsequently attended the University of Paris and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In 1955, Culberson joined the botany department at Duke University; he subsequently managed Duke's acquisition of the lichen-centric herbaria of Julien Harmand and Johan Havaas.
