''Platinum Jazz'' is a double album, the ninth studio album by War, released on Blue Note Records in July 1977.Umphred, Neal, ''Goldmine Price Guide to Collectibble Record Albums'', Fifth Edition, 1996 (source of release date, though album has copyright date of 1977) The album is an unusual entry in War's discography in several aspects. Its first half is new material, while its second half is a compilation of tracks from previous albums. It is also the only record they made for Blue Note, a jazz label, which was then owned and controlled by their current label at the time, United Artists Records, so it was not a matter of changing labels or going outside of contract. War (originally called Eric Burdon and War) is an American funk/ rock/soul band from Long Beach, California, known for several hit songs (including " Spill the Wine", " The World Is a Ghetto", " The Cisco Kid", " Why Can't We Be Friends?", " Low Rider", and "Summer"). Formed in 1969, War is a musical crossover band that fuses elements of rock, funk, jazz, Latin, rhythm and blues, psychedelia, and reggae. ''Why Can't We Be Friends?'' is the seventh studio album by American funk band War, released on June 16, 1975 by United Artists Records. Two singles from the album were released: the title track backed with "In Mazatlan", and "Low Rider" backed with "So". Both A-sides were nominated for the Grammy Awards of 1976. Of the songs on this album, an interpolation of the first part of the song "Smile Happy" was used in the song "It Wasn't Me" by Shaggy featuring RikRok. Versions of the album's titular song has been used in several film productions, notably '' Bridge to Terabithia'' and '' Wild Things''. ''The World Is a Ghetto'' is the fifth album by American band War, released in late 1972 on United Artists Records. The album attained the number one spot on ''Billboard'', and was ''Billboard'' magazine's Album of the Year as the best-selling album of 1973. In addition to being ''Billboard'''s #1 album of 1973, the album was ranked number 444 on ''Rolling Stone'' magazine's original list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The title track became a gold record. Cover The cover illustration, a light-hearted drawing showing a Rolls-Royce with a flat tire in a ghetto, was drawn by Howard Miller, with Lee Oskar credited with album concept. It uses a blue and black colour pallet as a reference to the melancholy nature of the album. ''Deliver the Word'' is the sixth album by War, released in 1973 on United Artists Records. Reception The album featured two singles, "Gypsy Man" (severely truncated from the 11 minute album version) backed with "Deliver the Word" (US #8), and "Me and Baby Brother" backed with "In Your Eyes" (US #15). A live version of "Me and Baby Brother" had been released previously on ''All Day Music'' (1971). The title "H2Overture" is a pun on H2O, the chemical formula for water. A 4-channel surround sound (quadraphonic) mix was also released for the album in the 8-track tape format (United Artists UA-DA128-H), featuring a different track order, a reprise of "H2Overture" with early fade-out, and an early fade-out of "Gypsy Man". Charles Miller (musician)
Charles William Miller (June 2, 1939 – June 4, 1980) was an American musician best known as the saxophonist and flutist for multicultural California funk band War. Notably, Miller provided lead vocals as well as sax on the band's ''Billboard'' R&B #1 hit " Low Rider" (1975). Biography Miller was born in Olathe, Kansas, moved with his family to Los Angeles two years later, and settled in Long Beach, California. His father was a musician who featured with organist Paul Bryant. Charles was always interested in music, which included his playing of woodwinds, piano, and guitar, as well as with school bands and school orchestras. In 1967, Charles' interest in music was secondary to football until, when at Long Beach City College, he sustained a football injury. Harold Ray Brown
Harold Ray Brown (born March 17, 1946) is a founding member of War, an American funk band in the 1970s and 2000s. Harold had a number of roles over the years, acting as drummer, percussion, vocalist, and bandleader. Brown is the oldest of six children, and the only one in his family to pursue music. Beginning with the congas, Brown progressed to violin while in elementary school, and took up drums in junior high. He turned down a full scholarship to Valparaiso University in 1964 in order to pursue music. Brown was rooted in the very beginnings of War. In 1962, he met Howard E. Scott at the Cozy Lounge in Long Beach, California. They were fifteen years old at the time and were hired to play in a band for a casual gig. Brown started a band called the Creators in 1963 in Long Beach while going to Long Beach Polytechnic High School, to play for high school sock hops and car shows.
