Planet Girls
''Planet Girls'' is an archival studio album by the American rock band Sponge, released in 2024 through Sound City Records. The album was originally slated for release in 1999 before being shelved by Beyond, leading to the release of Sponge's third album, '' New Pop Sunday''. Production Sponge recorded most of ''Planet Girls'' while they were still with Columbia Records, with the help of producer Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, Journey, The Black Crowes). The label was not interested in releasing it however, so the band decided to finish the album themselves and attempt to release it through Beyond instead, before its eventual shelving in 1998. Sponge had re-recorded the album and subsequently released ''New Pop Sunday'' in place of ''Planet Girls''. On April 20, 2024, to coincide with Record Store Day, Sponge partnered with Sound City Records to release ''Planet Girls'' on vinyl, initially through in-store purchase, and then online purchase starting April 21. Sponge (band)
Sponge is an American rock band formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1992 by vocalist Vinnie Dombroski, guitarist Mike Cross, bassist Tim Cross, drummer Jimmy Paluzzi, and guitarist Joey Mazzola. Dombroski and the Cross brothers were previously in the hard rock band Loudhouse, with Mazzola joining later before the end of the band's tenure. Sponge's discography includes ten studio albums, four live albums, and several charting singles. They are best known for their 1994 hit " Plowed", their 1995 hit "Molly (16 Candles Down the Drain)", and their 1996 hit " Wax Ecstatic (To Sell Angelina)". Alternative Rock
Alternative rock (also known as alternative music, alt-rock or simply alternative) is a category of rock music that evolved from the independent music underground of the 1970s. Kevin Shirley, also known as The Caveman, is a South African music producer, engineer, audio mixer, and musician. He has produced music for many artists, including Silverchair, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, The Hoodoo Gurus, The Angels, and Cold Chisel. As of 2023 he is a musician in Jimmy Barnes' supergroup, releasing a self-titled album in 2023. Early life and education Kevin John Shirley was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. Beyond Music was an American record label group based in Los Angeles, California. It was founded in August 1998 by Allen Kovac. The label group operated as an arm of Kovac's Left Bank Management firm (founded in 1983), which he jointly ran with Jeffrey Sydney. ''New Pop Sunday'' is the third studio album by the American rock band Sponge, released in 1999 through Beyond. Record Store Day is a semi-annual event established in 2008 to "celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store". Held on one Saturday (typically the third) every April and every Black Friday in November, the day brings together fans, artists, and thousands of independent record stores around the world. Vinnie Dombroski is an American musician, best known as the lead vocalist and main songwriter for the rock music, rock band Sponge (band), Sponge. He also fronted the short-lived supergroup (music), supergroup Spys4Darwin, and has been a member of several Detroit-based bands throughout his career. Dombroski is also the lead vocalist and co-founder of the Lucid alongside bassist David Ellefson (ex-Megadeth), guitarist Drew Fortier (ex-Bang Tango), and drummer Mike Heller (ex-Fear Factory). Joey Mazzola
Joey Mazzola is an American musician, songwriter, and artist, best known as a founding member of the rock band Sponge. Career A Detroit native, Mazzola spent 1987 to 1992 on the Los Angeles club circuit. He was the original Sponge guitarist and played with the band for twelve years, leaving in 2004. After his tenure with Sponge, Mazzola branched out into functional art. Using reclaimed and recycled metals and materials, he set up a studio named Eastworks Detroit. Mazzola began experimenting with a combination of iron, brass and copper pipes as well as glass and wood, creating an entire body of work. Designing fun and functional lamps and lighting from items such as mid-century modern fans. Mazzola's daughter, Rose Mazzola, co-founded the punk rock band the Distillers in 1998.
