Plainfield, Ontario is a small rural community in the Provinces and territories of Canada, Canadian province of Ontario. It is located in Hastings County, Ontario, Hastings County 10 miles north of Belleville, Ontario, Belleville. History In 1851, Plainfield was called Latta's Mills. It received its current name in 1860 to "reflect the relatively level topography of the area". Legend has it that John Meyers (loyalist), John Meyers, founder of Plainfield, saw two Aboriginal people in a canoe with a large load of silver. Meyers followed them secretly to the Scuttlehole caves. As he followed them they disappeared. It is believed that the silver is hidden somewhere in the caves. Many visitors have tried to find the silver through spelunking. Plainfield soil series is the name given to a sandy soil which has developed on coarse-textured drift. It is an excessively drained entisol which typically has a brown profile with weak horizon development. This is an extensive soil, covering more than in the midwestern United States and southern Ontario in Canada. It has a long history of cultivation with corn, grains and hay the chief crops. It is not as severely leached as the sandy podzols found in cooler, wetter climates, but poor land management has made some areas infertile. Today, pine plantations are common in the less fertile areas while farms under intensive management, including irrigation, raise specialty produce such as sweet corn and snap beans. Plainfield is a census-designated place (CDP) and the namesake village in the town of Plainfield, Sullivan County, New Hampshire, United States. The population of the CDP was 178 at the 2020 census, out of 2,459 in the entire town. Geography The CDP is in the western part of the town of Plainfield, along New Hampshire Route 12A, which leads north to Interstate 89 in West Lebanon and south to the Cornish–Windsor Covered Bridge over the Connecticut River.
