Pirx
Pilot Pirx is a fictional character introduced in 1966 in the science fiction stories of Polish writer Stanisław Lem: ten short stories (published in English in two parts, 1979's ''Tales of Pirx the Pilot'' and 1982's ''More Tales of Pirx the Pilot''). Later he appeared in the novel ''Fiasco''. In the stories, Pirx is progressively depicted as a spaceship cadet, beginner pilot, a seasoned pilot, navigator, and finally, captain (''komandor''). ''Tales of Pirx the Pilot'' is a science fiction stories collection by Polish author Stanisław Lem, about a spaceship pilot named Pirx. The first collection of stories about Pirx was published in 1965 in the Soviet Union in Russian under the title ''Охота на Сэтавра'' ("The Hunt for Setaur"). It was translated in Latvian as ''Petaura medības'' in 1966. In 2009 a Lithuanian publisher ''Eridanas'' published the story as ''Setauro Medžioklė.'' In Poland a more complete collection (as ''Opowieści o pilocie Pirxie'') was published in 1968, and translated to English in two parts (''Tales of Pirx the Pilot'' and ''More Tales of Pirx the Pilot'') in 1979 and 1982. ''Fiasco'' ( pl, Fiasko) is a science fiction novel by Polish author Stanisław Lem, first published in a German translation in 1986. The book, published in Poland the following year and translated into English by Michael Kandel in the same year, is a further elaboration of Lem's skepticism: in Lem's opinion, the difficulty in communication with extraterrestrial intelligence (the main theme of the novel) is more likely cultural disparity rather than spatial distance. It was nominated for the Arthur C. Clarke Award. The novel was written on order from publisher S. Fischer Verlag around the time Lem was emigrating from Poland due to the introduction of martial law. BD+14 4559 b, named Pirx, is an exoplanet orbiting the K-type main sequence star BD+14 4559 about 161 light-years (49 parsecs, or nearly km) from Earth in the constellation Pegasus. Wiktor Żwikiewicz (19 March 1950) is a Polish writer of science fiction. Biography in the 1970s and 1980s he published a number of short stories, collected in four anthologies, as well as for novels.
