Giorgi Shengelaia ( ka, გიორგი შენგელაია; ; 11 May 1937 – 17 February 2020) was a Georgian and Soviet film director. He directed 14 films since 1961. His film Pirosmani (film), ''Pirosmani'' (a poetic film about the great Georgian primitive artist Niko Pirosmanishvili who worked circa 1915) won the Grand Prize at the Chicago International Film Festival in 1974 and went on to international critical acclaim. His 1985 film ''The Journey of a Young Composer'' was entered into the 36th Berlin International Film Festival where he won the Silver Bear for Best Director. The Chicago International Film Festival is an annual film festival held every fall. Founded in 1964 by Michael Kutza, it is the longest-running competitive film festival in North America. Its logo is a stark, black and white close up of the composite eyes of early film actresses Theda Bara, Pola Negri, and Mae Murray, set as repeated frames in a strip of film. The BFI London Film Festival is an annual film festival held in London, England, in collaboration with the British Film Institute. Founded in 1957, the festival runs for two weeks every October. Dodo Abashidze
David 'Dodo' Abashidze ( ka, დავით [დოდო] აბაშიძე; ; 1 May 1924 – 26 January 1990) was a Soviet Georgian actor and film Film director, director. He was named People’s Artist of Georgia in 1967. After his death a Tbilisi street was named in his honor. He appeared in 50 films between 1954 and 1988. Abashidze studied at the Shota Rustaveli Theater Institute in Tbilisi, graduating in 1949. He then joined the troupe of the Rustaveli Theater but after a few years dedicated himself fully to cinema. Erlom Akhvlediani
Erlom Akhvlediani ( ka, ერლომ ახვლედიანი; 23 November 1933 – 20 March 2012) was a Georgian novelist and scriptwriter. Akhvlediani was born in Tbilisi and graduated from Tbilisi State University in 1957, majoring in history. He took higher education courses at the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow from 1962 to 1964. From 1962 to 1999, he wrote scripts for 18 films and starred in four movies. He authored three novels and several short stories, some of which have been translated in Russian, Armenian, Czech, German, Hungarian, and Arabic. Among many accolades Erlom Akhvlediani won were the USSR State Prize (1980) and the Georgian Literary Award SABA (2010).
