''Pinoy'' ( or ) is a common informal self-reference used by Filipinos to refer to citizens of the Philippines and their culture as well as to overseas Filipinos in the Filipino diaspora. A Pinoy who has any non-Filipino foreign ancestry, particularly white ancestry, is often informally called ''Tisoy'', derived from Spanish ''mestizo''. Many Filipinos refer to themselves as ''Pinoy'', sometimes the feminine ''Pinay'' ( ), instead of the standard term ''Filipino''. ''Filipino'' is the widespread formal word used to call a citizen of the Philippines. Filipino Americans () are Americans of Filipino ancestry. Filipinos in North America were first documented in the 16th century and other small settlements beginning in the 18th century. Mass migration did not begin until after the end of the Spanish–American War at the end of the 19th century, when the Philippines was ceded from Spain to the United States in the Treaty of Paris.
