Pinal County is in the central part of the U.S. state of Arizona. According to the 2020 census, the population of the county was 425,264, making it Arizona's third-most populous county. The county seat is Florence. The county was founded in 1875. Pinal County contains parts of the Tohono Oʼodham Nation, the Gila River Indian Community and the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation, as well as all of the Ak-Chin Indian Community. Pinal County is included in the Phoenix–Mesa– Scottsdale, Arizona Metropolitan Statistical Area. Suburban growth southward from greater Phoenix has begun to spread into the county's northern parts; similarly, growth northward from Tucson is spreading into the county's southern portions. Pinal Peak, located in southern Gila County, Arizona, is the highest point in the Pinal Mountains, with an elevation of . It is the highest point of land located in between the Salt and Gila rivers in Arizona before they merge, making it visible from miles away on a clear day. The peak ranks as the 11th most prominent in Arizona and has a topographic isolation of , with the nearest point of land of equal or greater elevation being to the southeast in the Santa Teresa Mountains. They have a maximum elevation of at Pinal Peak and a prominence of over . The closest city is the Globe, Arizona/ Miami, Arizona area, which is just a few miles north of the mountain range. The mountains are located within the Tonto National Forest, and their recreational facilities are maintained by the USDA's United States Forest Service. The San Carlos Indian Reservation is very close to the mountain range, with its boundaries being just a few miles east/northeast of the range. The mountains are covered with Ponderosa Pine and white fir and experience cooler weather than the Globe/Miami area, so that they are a popular recreation area in the summer. The 8th Arizona Territorial Legislative Assembly was a session of the Arizona Territorial Legislature which convened from January 4, 1875, till February 12, 1875, in Tucson, Arizona Territory. Background The Indian Wars continued throughout the territory, but General George Crook's strategies were showing clear progress. Beginning in April 1873, a majority of the territory's Apache population began converging on Camp Verde to seek amnesty. In exchange for food and protection, the surrendering Apache agreed to live on reservations and follow the instructions of Indian agents. A secondary benefit of the military action was that the General had ordered his scouts to map the trails they discovered. As a result, many areas previously unknown to American settlers were mapped.
