Pill Priory
Pill Priory is a Tironian house founded near Milford Haven, Pembrokeshire, South West Wales in the late 12th century. Pill Priory was founded as a daughter house of St Dogmaels Abbey (raised to Abbey status in 1120), near Cardigan, itself a priory of the Tironensian order of reformed Benedictine monks. The other daughter houses were Caldey (Caldey Island, Pembrokeshire, Wales) and Glascarrig, County Wexford in Ireland. Pill Priory was established by the Roche family of the Barony and Roch Castle, Pembrokeshire and was founded within a few years of St Dogmaels. The founder was Adam de la Roche, a descendant of Godebert de Fleming. E. M. Pritchard thought it to be around 1180–90, while the Pembrokeshire antiquarian Richard Fenton considered the earlier date of 1160–70 to be possible. The priory was jointly dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and to St Budoc, a dedication of it was the former chapel of St Budoc (now " St Botolph") which lay 1.3 km north-east of Pill ...

Pillgwenlly
Pillgwenlly (), usually referred to as Pill, is a community and electoral ward in the city of Newport, South Wales. It is the centre of the historic docks industry in south east Wales and contains a number of landmarks that remain from that era. Today it is one of the most diverse wards in Wales, and has seen significant migration dating back to the 19th century. Etymology The name is an elision of " Pîl Gwynllyw" (or "Gwynllyw's Pîl" in English). ' Pîl' is a localised topographical element (found across the coast of South Wales, from Pembrokeshire and into Somerset) indicating a tidal inlet from the sea, suitable as a harbour. In local tradition, it is said that this name derives from the early part of Gwynllyw's life when he was an active pirate. The tradition states that Gwynllyw maintained his ships at Pillgwenlly. Gwynllyw's reputation amongst sailors saw him adopted as the patron saint of choice for Welsh pirates and smugglers including Sir Henry Morgan. Geography ...

Pill, Somerset
Pill is a village in North Somerset, England, situated on the southern bank of the Avon, about north-west of Bristol city centre. The village is the largest settlement in the civil parish of Pill and Easton-in-Gordano (until 2011 named Easton in Gordano). The former hamlets of Lodway and Ham Green are now contiguous with Pill, and the village of Easton in Gordano is nearby. The parish extends northwest beyond the M5 motorway to include the Royal Portbury Dock. History The name "Pill" comes from the Welsh word '' Pîl'' which denotes a tidal inlet or harbour. The later name Crockerne Pill (literally 'pottery wharf') arose from the fact that an industrial-scale pottery thrived nearby. The Ham Green Pottery kiln was excavated in 1959 and is located in the fields above Chapel Pill. The pottery was made in the period from 1100 AD to 1250 AD and was exported from Pill by boat. The so-called 'Ham Green' pottery has been found and identified in archaeological digs from the Algar ...

Pil (placename)
Pîl (also rendered as Pill, Pil or Pyll) is a Welsh language, Welsh Welsh placename, placename element. The name is defined as the tidal reach of a waterway, suitable as a harbour, and is common along the Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary. The highly localised distribution suggests it may have been part of a common maritime culture on the waterways within the tidal reach of the Severn Sea. The name is today most commonly associated with the village of Pyle in Glamorgan, and the small village of Pill, Somerset, Pill in Somerset. Usage In Welsh toponymy and hydronymy the word is often mistaken for another word "Pŵll" ("Pool"). However, there is no proven link between the words and the two are often found within the same localities (Caerleon has both a ''Bulmore, Pwll Mawr'' and a ''Pîl Mawr'' either side of the Isca Augusta, Roman port). It is thought that Pîl developed a secondary meaning of 'refuge', as the name also appears in more inland areas (such as Pilleth in Powys). ...
