Pilipinas Basketball Club
San Miguel Alab Pilipinas (under the corporate name Pilipinas Basketball Club, Inc. or PBCI) was a Filipino professional basketball team which played in the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) under the sponsorship of San Miguel Corporation. The team was owned and managed by the sports talent management firm, Virtual Playground, headed by talent agents Dondon Monteverde and Charlie Dy. Alab Pilipinas is the fourth Philippine team to play in the ABL. "Alab" is a Filipino word that translates as "blaze" in English. The team was originally known as Alab Pilipinas (2016-17 ABL season) as the fourth ABL team from the Philippines. From November 2017 to January 2018, it was known as Tanduay Alab Pilipinas, under the sponsorship of Tanduay Distillers, Inc. The Philippines men's national volleyball team represents Philippines in international volleyball competitions and friendly matches, governed by Philippine National Volleyball Federation since 2021. History The national team played as early as the 1910s playing at the 1913 Far Eastern Championship Games where the first international volleyball competition was played. In the contemporary era, men's volleyball in the Philippines receive less attention than the women's. The men's national team under coach Dante Alinsunurin would win a silver medal at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games hosted at home marking a milestone in men's volleyball in the Philippines. However the COVID-19 pandemic would halt training of the men's national team as well as domestic league. The 2018 ABL playoffs is the postseason tournament concluding the 2017–18 season of the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL). The top two teams that had the best regular-season records qualified directly to the semifinals, while the third to sixth best teams faced each other in the quarterfinals. The quarterfinals and the semifinals are a best-of-three series, while the finals is a best-of-five series. Mega Manila is a megalopolis on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. The COVID-19 pandemic began in Asia in Wuhan, Hubei, China, and has spread widely through the continent. As of , at least one case of COVID-19 had been reported in every country in Asia except Turkmenistan. The Asian countries with the highest numbers of confirmed coronavirus cases are India, South Korea, Turkey, Vietnam, and Iran. Despite being the first area of the world hit by the outbreak, the early wide-scale response of some Asian states, particularly Bhutan, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam has allowed them to fare comparatively well. The 2019–20 ABL season was the tenth season of competition in the ASEAN Basketball League. The regular season started on 16 November 2019 and was set to end on 28 March 2020. On 15 July 2020, the league announced the cancellation of the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak. No league title was awarded. The 2015–16 ASEAN Basketball League season was the sixth season of competition of the ASEAN Basketball League (ABL). The regular season started on 27 October 2015 and ended on 21 February 2016. The 2017–18 ABL season is the eighth season of competition of the ASEAN Basketball League. The regular season started on 17 November 2017 and ended on 28 March 2018. Teams Five teams from the 2016–2017 ABL season returned for this season. One team, the Kaohsiung Truth, disbanded prior to the season. One team, Mono Vampire, returned after skipping last season, having played in the 2015–16 ABL season. The team plans to concurrently play in the ABL and in the Thailand Basketball League for the upcoming season. Three teams were accepted as new members: Nanhai Long-Lions, Formosa Dreamers and CLS Knights Surabaya.
