Pilfers
Pilfers are an American ska band formed in 1997, when former Toasters vocalist, Coolie Ranx, at the urging of Pietaster's vocalist Steve Jackson, joined with former Bim Skala Bim trombonist, Vinny Nobile. To complete the lineup, they recruited the Skinnerbox rhythm section of Anna Milat-Meyer on bass and James Blanck on drums, as well as guitar player, Nick Bacon of The Erratics. History The band released one demo tape and played many New York City area shows, before self-releasing their debut, self-titled album, in 1998. Response was positive enough, that the band was signed to Mojo Records, and they released '' Chawalaleng'', one year later. Soon after their major label debut, Anna Milat-Meyer and James Blanck, left the group. Anna Milat-Meyer took a position, playing bass, in Latin Jazz band, Los Mas Valientes. Coolie Ranx
Coolie Ranx (born Obiajula Ugbomah; 9 March 1965) is a British-Jamaican actor and singer best known for his membership in the third wave ska bands The Toasters and Pilfers. He is a long-time resident of New York City. Biography Ranx was born in London on 9 March 1965 and was raised in New York City. His mother is from Jamaica and his father is from Nigeria. He was discovered in 1990 when the lead singer and guitarist of The Toasters, Robert "Bucket" Hingley, Rob "Bucket" Hingley, heard Ranx's dancehall reggae EP. Joining the Toasters in the early 1990s, he toured and recorded two albums with the band, including ''Dub 56'', which features two songs he wrote. After leaving the Toasters, Ranx co-founded a band called Pilfers. In Pilfers, he shared vocal duties with Vinny Nobile. Chawalaleng
''Chawalaleng'' is the Pilfers' second full-length album, and their first and only to be released on a major label. It was released on September 21, 1999 through Mojo Records. ''Chawalaleng'' is a record that blends pop, metal, reggae, dub, hardcore, ska, and soul to create a musical genre that the band calls raggacore. The song "Legal Shot Pam Pam" was written by Coolie Ranx and originally recorded on The Toasters album '' Dub 56''. The song "Climbing" was featured in MTV Sports: Skateboarding Featuring Andy MacDonald, released on the Sega Dreamcast. Spring Heeled Jack (band)
Spring Heeled Jack (known alternatively for a time as Spring Heeled Jack U.S.A.) is a third wave ska band based out of New Haven, Connecticut. The band was formed by guitarist/vocalist Ron Ragona and drummer Dave Karcich in 1991. After a short breakup, Ragona and Karcich reformed the band with a new lineup. This lineup went on to record two albums before announcing a hiatus in 2000. While the band members moved on to perform in several new bands, their intention was to play the occasional reunion show. This plan would never come to fruition as a cerebral aneurysm would be cause for Karcich's death in 2002. In 2015, several band members returned to reform the band full-time. A third studio album, ''Sound Salvation'', followed in 2017. History In 1990, Stephen Jackson (musician), Stephen Jackson and Chris Watt met at Virginia Tech, through mutual friend Tal Bayer, who was attending nearby Radford University, and they formed a ska band called the Slugs with their former schoolmate Tom Goodin, and an architecture classmate, Ben Gauslin. They changed their name to the Dancecrashers for a few months, before taking the name the Pietasters. The newly formed band convinced the local college booking agency to bring the band Bad Manners from England to perform at the Virginia Tech auditorium, with themselves as the opening act. This was their first public performance, following shows they had staged in the living room of Jackson and Watt's rental house. The two bands later toured the U.S. and Europe together. Lost City Angels
Lost City Angels were a punk rock band from Boston, Massachusetts. Their most well-known line-up consisted of members, Ron Ragona, Adam Shaw, Chris Duggan, Drew Indingaro and Nick Bacon. Overview Lost City Angels were founded in 2001 by Adam Shaw, Chris Duggan and guitarist Drew Indingaro. The original line-up was completed when former Bruisers guitarist, Scott Vierra, and former Spring Heeled Jack vocalist/guitarist joined soon after. Following a year or so of touring, Vierra decided to move on and Ragona's fellow Spring Heeled Jack bandmate, Mike Pellegrino stepped in to play guitar. The Toasters
The Toasters are one of the original American second wave of ska bands. Founded in New York City in 1981, the band has released nine studio albums, primarily through Moon Ska Records. History Englishman Robert "Bucket" Hingley relocated to New York City in 1980, where he managed that city's Forbidden Planet comic book store location. Hingley formed the Toasters in 1981 after seeing the Beat perform at the Roseland Ballroom. The group's first live show was supporting Bad Brains at A7 in 1981. One of the original second-wave ska bands, the early Toasters lineup included other employees of the Forbidden Planet store. The group self-released their first single, "Beat Up", in 1983. Edna's Goldfish
Edna's Goldfish was an American ska punk band from Long Island, New York. Together from 1997 to 2000, their studio albums include ''Before You Knew Better'' (1998) and ''The Elements of Transition'' (1999), both released on Moon Ska Records. The video for their song "Veronica Sawyer" received some airplay on the MTV show ''120 Minutes''. The band toured with bands such as The Toasters, Catch 22, Mustard Plug, Reel Big Fish, and Less Than Jake.
