Pievepelago
Pievepelago ( Frignanese: or ) is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Modena in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna in the heart of the northern Apennine Mountains. Situated on the Scoltenna River, in a mountain valley, it is a tourist resort crossed by the Via Vandelli. It is about southwest of Bologna, about southwest of Modena, about north of Lucca and about northwest of Florence. It has a population of about 2200 inhabitants, spread among the main town and its ''frazioni'', Sant'Annapelago, Roccapelago, Sant'Andreapelago and Tagliole. History Pievepelago is of medieval origins. The first document which attests the presence of a village in the valley belongs to the 10th century. The name of the village came from the presence of the ''pieve'' (rural church) of Santa Maria Assunta since its early years. Santa Maria Assunta, Pievepelago
Santa Maria Assunta is Roman Catholic parish church located in the town of Pievepelago in the region of Emilia-Romagna, Italy. History A parish church at the site is documented since 1038, but little remains of that building. Construction of the present parish began 1868 designed by Cesare Costa (architect), Cesare Costa, and was consecrated in 1874. The church houses a ''Glory of Santa Filomena'' by Adeodato Malatesta. The counter facade has paintings depicting ''St Francis and the Immaculate Conception'' (1918) by Gaetano Bellei. The left transept has a reliquary urn for St Theodore in Neocalssic style by Gaetano Boccini. The main chapel has an altarpiece depicting the ''Virgin in Glory'' by the painter Carlo Rizzi. The church also houses a ''St Luigi Gonzaga'' (1853) by Luigi Asioli. Palmiro Serafini (27 February 1945 – 28 December 2013) was an Italian ski mountaineer and cross-country skier. Serafini was born in Pievepelago. He participated at the 1968 Winter Olympics, when he placed sixth together with Giulio de Florian, Franco Nones and Aldo Stella in the 4 × 10 kilometres relay event of cross-country skiing. Monte Cimone
Monte Cimone is the highest mountain in the northern Apennines, of Italy. Geography The mountain has an elevation of 2,165 m and is also the highest point in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. It encompasses the ''comuni'' of Fiumalbo, Sestola, Fanano and Riolunato in the province of Modena. Abetone
Abetone was a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Pistoia in the Italian region of Tuscany, located about northwest of Florence and about northwest of Pistoia. It has been a frazione of Abetone Cutigliano since 2017. History Abetone (in Italian: "large fir") was founded as a custom post in 1732 on the highest point of the main road between the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and the Duchy of Modena. The name derives from a large tree, which was cut down to allow the construction to proceed. Starting from the early 20th century, it became a popular skiing resort.
