Pierre Polinière
Pierre Polinière (8 September 1671 – 9 February 1734) was an early investigator of electricity and electrical phenomena, notably "barometric light", a form of gas-discharge light, which suggested the possibility of electric lighting. He also helped to introduce the scientific method in French universities. Biography Pierre Polinière was born in Coulonces, Calvados. He was the only child of Jean-Baptiste Poulynière and Françoise Vasnier. Pierre's father had inherited an estate in Coulonces in lower Normandy. However, when Pierre was 3 years old, his father died. Fortunately his mother recognized his potential and strove to get him a good education. Barometric light is a name for the light that is emitted by a mercury-filled barometer tube when the tube is shaken. The discovery of this phenomenon in 1675 revealed the possibility of electric lighting. The phenomenon and its explanation The earliest barometers were simply glass tubes that were closed at one end and filled with mercury. The tube was then inverted and its open end was submerged in a cup of mercury. The mercury then drained out of the tube until the pressure of the mercury in the tube—as measured at the surface of the mercury in the cup—equaled the atmosphere's pressure on the same surface. In order to produce barometric light, the glass tube must be very clean and the mercury must be pure. If the barometer is then shaken, a band of light will appear on the glass at the meniscus of the mercury whenever the mercury moves downward. Gas-discharge lamps are a family of artificial light sources that generate light by sending an electric discharge through an ionization, ionized gas, a plasma (physics), plasma. Geography

Located on the banks of the Brévogne, it is a typical village of the Bocage Virois. The village is 4 km southwest of La Graverie, 5 km northwest of Vire, and 12 km east of Saint-Sever-Calvados. The highest point (196 m) is located in the south-western area, and the lowest point (84 m) is in the northeast.

Pierre Varignon
Pierre Varignon (; 1654 – 23 December 1722) was a French mathematician. He was educated at the Society of Jesus, Jesuit College and the University of Caen, where he received his Magister Artium, M.A. in 1682. He took Holy Orders the following year. Varignon gained his first exposure to mathematics by reading Euclid and then René Descartes, Descartes' ''La Géométrie''. He became professor of mathematics at the Collège des Quatre-Nations, Collège Mazarin in Paris in 1688 and was elected to the Académie Royale des Sciences in the same year. In 1704, he held the departmental chair at Collège Mazarin and also became professor of mathematics at the Collège de France, Collège Royal. Francis Hauksbee (scientist)
Francis Hauksbee the Elder (1660–1713), also known as Francis Hawksbee, was an 18th-century English scientist best known for his work on electricity and electrostatic repulsion. Biography Francis Hauksbee was the son of draper and common councillor Richard Hauksbee and his wife Mary. He was baptized on 27 May 1660 in the parish of St Mary-at-the-Walls, Colchester. He was the fifth of five sons. In 1673 Hauksbee entered Colchester Royal Grammar School. From 1678 to at least 1685 he apprenticed as a draper in the City of London, initially to his eldest brother.
