Pierre Olivier (actor)
Pierre J. J. Olivier (1936 – 16 December 2003) was a South African jurist and judge who served in the Supreme Court of Appeal from 1995 until his death in 2003. He was an advocate and silk in Bloemfontein until he was appointed to the bench in 1985 as a judge of the Orange Free State Provincial Division of the Supreme Court of South Africa. Before entering legal practice, he taught law at the University of Pretoria from 1961 to 1969 and at the University of the Orange Free State from 1969 to 1973; he specialised in private law. Early life and education Olivier was born in Usakos, Namibia in 1936. He matriculated at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch, South Africa, and attended the University of Pretoria from 1957 to 1960, completing an LLB and a BA in law. The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA), formerly known as the Appellate Division, is the second-highest appellate court, court of appeal in South Africa below the Constitutional Court of South Africa, Constitutional Court. The country's apex court from 1910 to 1994, it no longer holds that position, having been displaced in constitutional matters by the Constitutional Court in 1994, and in General jurisdiction, all matters by 2013. It is located in Bloemfontein. An advocate is a professional in the field of law. Different countries and legal systems use the term with somewhat differing meanings. The broad equivalent in many English law–based jurisdictions could be a barrister or a solicitor. However, in Scottish, Manx, South African, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Scandinavian, Polish, Israeli, South Asian and South American jurisdictions, "advocate" indicates a lawyer of superior classification.
