Varese ( , ; or ; ; ; archaic ) is a city and ''comune'' in north-western Lombardy, northern Italy, north-west of Milan. The population of Varese in 2018 was 80,559. The FIS Alpine Ski World Cup is the top international circuit of alpine skiing competitions, launched in 1966 by a group of ski racing friends and experts which included French journalist Serge Lang (skiing), Serge Lang and the alpine ski team directors from France (Honore Bonnet) and the United States Ski Team, USA (Bob Beattie (skiing), Bob Beattie). The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships is an alpine skiing competition organized by the International Ski Federation (FIS). History The inaugural world championships in alpine skiing were held in 1931. It consisted of Downhill (ski competition), downhill and Slalom skiing, slalom events for men and women. Next year the Alpine skiing combined, combined event was added to the program as a "paper" race which used the results of the downhill and slalom. During the 1930s, the event was held annually in Europe, until interrupted by the outbreak of World War II, preventing a 1940 event. The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1982 were held in Schladming, Austria, between 28 January and 7 February 1982.
