Piccadilly Tournament
The Piccadilly Medal was a men's professional golf tournament on the British PGA tournament circuit that was played in 1962 and from 1964 to 1976. Since the circuit later evolved into the European Tour, the tournament is recognised as an official European Tour event from 1972. It was played in a variety of formats. From 1962 to 1967 it was a 72-hole stroke-play event, in 1968 it was a four-ball better-ball match play event, from 1969 to 1975 it was a knockout stroke-play event while in 1976 it reverted to the 72-hole stroke-play format. From 1964 to 1968 the event was played on the East course at Wentworth, just before the Piccadilly World Match Play Championship which was played on the West Course there. Carreras withdrew their golf sponsorship after the 1976 season. History The event started in 1962 as the Piccadilly Number One tournament. Total prize money was £8,000 with a first prize of £2,000. Jimmy Martin (golfer)
James Martin (17 July 1924 – 14 February 2000) was an Irish professional golfer who enjoyed three victories on the British circuit in the 1960s, including the Piccadilly Medal in 1964 and the Carroll's International in 1968. Martin was born in Wicklow. His father was the professional at Greystones Golf Club. He was selected to represent Ireland at five World Cups between 1962 and 1970, and also to represent Great Britain in the Ryder Cup at Royal Birkdale in 1965, where he would play in - and lose - one foursomes match, in partnership with Jimmy Hitchcock, to Julius Boros and Tony Lema. 1975 European Tour
The 1975 European Tour, titled as the 1975 PGA Tournament Players' Section, was the fourth season of the European Tour, the main professional golf tour in Europe since its inaugural season in 1972. Changes for 1975 There were several changes from the previous season, with the addition of the Carroll's Irish Open, which replaced the Carroll's International and the Kerrygold International Classic; and the loss of the Penfold Tournament, the W.D. & H.O. Wills Tournament and the El Paraiso Open. Following the withdrawal of sponsors, Lord Derby's Young Professionals' Tournament and the Coca-Cola Young Professionals' Championship were also lost from the schedule, the PGA ultimately decided to sponsor an under-25's event themselves. Bob Shearer
Robert Alan Shearer (25 May 1948 – 9 January 2022) was an Australian professional golfer and golf course architect. Early life and amateur career Shearer was born in Melbourne, Victoria. He won the 1969 Australian Amateur, having been a joint medalist the previous year. Professional career Shearer turned professional in early 1971. He won the PGA Tour of Australia Order of Merit four times: 1974, 1977, 1981, 1982. He spent five years on the European Tour and then nine on the PGA Tour. His career year was 1982 when he won the Australian Open and his sole PGA Tour event, the Tallahassee Open. He had 18 top-10 finishes in PGA Tour events. His best finish in a major championship was a T-7 at the 1978 Open Championship. Later he split his time between his golf course design work and the European Senior Tour. The 1976 European Tour, titled as the 1976 PGA Tournament Players' Division, was the fifth season of the European Tour, the main professional golf tour in Europe since its inaugural season in 1972. Changes for 1976 The season was made up of 21 tournaments counting for the Order of Merit, and some non-counting tournaments that later became known as "Approved Special Events". The schedule included the major national opens around Europe, with the other tournaments mostly held in England and Scotland. Neil Coles
Neil Chapman Coles, MBE (born 26 September 1934) is an English professional golfer. Coles had a successful career in European golf, winning 29 important tournaments between 1956 and 1982. After reaching 50, he won a further 14 important Seniors tournaments between 1985 and 2002, winning his final European Seniors Tour event at the age of 67. He also played in eight Ryder Cup matches between 1961 and 1977. While he never became one of the leading stars of global golf, and did not win a major championship, Coles was remarkable for his consistency, and even more for his durability. He was five times a top-ten finisher in the Open Championship, finishing third in 1961 and second in 1973. Hugh Jackson (28 February 1940 – 27 September 2015) was an Irish professional golfer. He won the Piccadilly Fourball Match Play in 1968 and the Irish PGA Championship in 1970, the same year that he finished eighth in the Open Championship. 1968 Piccadilly World Match Play Championship
The 1968 Piccadilly World Match Play Championship was the fifth World Match Play Championship. It was played from Thursday 10 to Saturday 12 October on the West Course at Wentworth. Eight players competed in a straight knock-out competition, with each match contested over 36 holes. The champion received £5,000 out of a total prize fund of £16,000. In the final Gary Player beat Bob Charles at the 36th hole to win the tournament for the third time in four years. The tournament included two British golfers: Brian Huggett and Tony Jacklin. Huggett was drawn against Arnold Palmer and looked to be out of the championship when he was 4 down with six holes to play. Huggett then had five birdies in a row to reduce the gap to one hole.
