Phonographic Memory
''Phonographic Memory'' is the first album by the indie pop group The Alice Rose, released November 10, 2006, on Emerald Wood Records. The album was recorded between February and August, 2006, at Congress House Studio in Austin, Texas, with producer Mark Hallman and engineer Ned Stewart. The record's 10 songs, written by the lead vocalist JoDee Purkeypile, draw heavily from 1960s' rock and 1980s' power pop influences. Shortly after the record's release, the song ''"West"'' was named NPR's "Song of the Day" on November 27, 2006. Two years later, the song was used in the soundtrack to the award-winning independent horror film ''Splinter'', directed by Toby Wilkins, released in October 2008. Indie Rock
Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. Independent labels such as Flying Nun Records, Flying Nun began to promote the scene across New Zealand, inspiring key college rock bands in the United States such as Pavement (band), Pavement, Pixies (band), Pixies and R.E.M. Indie Pop
Indie pop (also typeset as indie-pop or indiepop) is a music genre and subculture that combines guitar pop with DIY ethic in opposition to the style and tone of mainstream pop music. It originated from British post-punk in the late 1970s and subsequently generated a thriving fanzine, label, and club and gig circuit. Compared to its counterpart, indie rock, the genre is more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively angst-free. In later years, the definition of ''indie pop'' has bifurcated to also mean bands from unrelated DIY scenes/movements with pop leanings. Subgenres include chamber pop and twee pop. All Haunt's Sound
''All Haunt's Sound'' is the second album by the indie pop group the Alice Rose, released in 2009. The album was recorded between March and December 2008, with the producer Andy Sharp at Music Lane Studio in Austin, Texas. The record contains 12 songs written by JoDee Purkeypile and has a more modern sound than its predecessor, ''Phonographic Memory'', with the style of the material containing influences of psychedelic folk ("Black Tide", "I Know Your Ghost") and indie rock ("She Did Command", "Maybe a Ride", "Waste Away"). It is the band's only album with the guitarist Gregg White, who contributed guitar to two songs. The album was released on February 21, 2009, on Emerald Wood Records. The Alice Rose
The Alice Rose were an indie pop/rock band from Austin, Texas, formed in 2000. The group's founding members are songwriter and guitarist JoDee Purkeypile, bassist Sean Crooks, and drummer Chris Sensat. 1995–2000 13 year old JoDee Purkeypile met 14-year-old Sean Crooks at Roy Bedichek Junior High in 1995. The two began playing songs by Nirvana together in Sean's garage on equipment left behind and taken home by Sean's father, Danny Crooks, from his 6th Street nightclub, Steamboat. No sooner had they learned of each other's love of The Beatles that they began learning songs from a Beatles chord book. By 1996, the two were recording demos on a dual cassette deck, recording guitars and drums live, often using one microphone, then playing back the tape on the playback deck whilst recording vocals on another tape. Mark Hallman
Mark Hallman (born August 1, 1951) is an American producer, songwriter, engineer and multi-instrumentalist. He has worked with Carole King (appearing on six of her albums as a performer and producer), Ani DiFranco, and Eliza Gilkyson. In the mid-'70s, Hallman was one of the two principal singer-songwriters for Boulder, Colorado-based rock band Navarro. Navarro put out two albums on Capitol Records, ''Listen'' in 1977 (produced by Hallman) and ''Straight From the Heart'' in 1978. While recording at Caribou Ranch in 1977, Carole King needed a backup band. Dan Fogelberg suggested Navarro and brought her to see them perform at The Stage Stop, in Rollinsville. Hallman had been the guitarist in Fogelberg's band as well. Power Pop
Power pop (also typeset as powerpop) is a form of pop rock based on the early music of bands such as the Who, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and the Byrds. It typically incorporates melodic hooks, vocal harmonies, an energetic performance, and cheerful sounding music underpinned by a sense of yearning, longing, or despair. Splinter (2008 Film)
''Splinter'' is a 2008 American horror film directed by Toby Wilkins and starring Shea Whigham, Paulo Costanzo, and Jill Wagner. It was filmed near Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
