Pholidoscelis Chrysolaemus
The common ameiva (''Pholidoscelis chrysolaemus'') is a species of lizard Endemism, endemic to Hispaniola and a number of smaller associated islands. It is known to engage in Homosexual behavior in animals, homosexual mating among males. Taxonomy The common ameiva was originally described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1868, as ''Ameiva chrysolaema''. The binomial nomenclature, specific epithet likely comes from the Greek language, Greek , meaning gold, and , meaning neck or throat, for the yellow throat and belly of this species. In 2016, the species was moved to ''Pholidoscelis'' based on Nucleic acid sequence, genetic sequencing and phylogenetics, phylogenetic analyses. Subspecies There are sixteen accepted subspecies in The Reptile Database. Given the variation among the subspecies, some authors suggest that they probably comprise more than one species. * ''Pholidoscelis chrysolaemus chrysolaemus'' (Cope 1868) * ''Pholidoscelis chrysolaemus abbotti'' (Noble 1923) * ''Pholidosceli ... Pholidoscelis Auberi
Auber's ameiva (''Pholidoscelis auberi)'', also known commonly as the Cuban ameiva, is a species of lizard in the family Teiidae. The species is native to the Bahamas and Cuba. There are 40 recognized subspecies. Etymology The specific name, ''auberi'', is in honor of Cuban botanist Pedro Alejandro Auber (1786–1843). Beolens B, Watkins M, Grayson M (2011). ''The Eponym Dictionary of Reptiles''. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press. xiii + 296 pp. . (''Ameiva auberi'', p. 12). Habitat The preferred natural habitats of ''P. auberi'' are shrubland and forest. Diet ''P. auberi'' preys upon invertebrates. Reproduction ''P. auberi'' is oviparous. Subspecies Including the nominotypical subspecies, 40 subspecies of ''P. auberi'' are recognized as being valid. 25 of these subspecies are found on Cuba and its associated islets. Pholidoscelis Erythrocephalus
The St. Christopher ameiva (''Pholidoscelis erythrocephalus'') is a lizard species in the genus ''Pholidoscelis''. It is found on the Caribbean island of Sint Eustatius, and on Saint Kitts and Nevis, where it is more scarce. Description Adult males reach a length of snout-to-vent. Adults of both sexes have a dark olive-green dorsal surface, tinged with reddish brown. Its head is more reddish and its sides more pink. Its underside is blue-gray, with a peach-colored throat and chin separated by a darker region. Its flanks are spotted and marbled, and its back and sides have narrow stripes along its length that fade towards its tail. Taxonomy The St. Christopher ameiva was originally described in early 1802 by George Shaw as ''Lacerta erythrocephala''. It was also described in August 1802 by François Marie Daudin as ''Ameiva erythrocephala'', though as Shaw's work was published at least 7 months prior to Daudin's, his name had priority. The type locality is on Saint Christopher ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Pholidoscelis Corvinus
The Sombrero ameiva (''Pholidoscelis corvinus''), also known commonly as the Sombrero groundlizard, is a species of lizard in the family Teiidae. The species is endemic to Sombrero, a small, uninhabited island in the Lesser Antilles under the jurisdiction of Anguilla. The species was originally described in the genus '' Ameiva''. Description Adults of ''P. corvinus'' are melanistic, appearing plain brown to slate black, with a dark green to black ventral surface mottled with light blue. The tail is sometimes spotted green. Males have brown flecks on the dorsal surface and browner heads. Males grow to snout-to-vent length (SVL), with females being considerably smaller. It is superficially similar in coloration and scalation to '' P. atratus'' and '' P. corax'', two other melanistic species also found on small, barren islands in the Caribbean. As the islands have similar habitats, this is likely the result of independent adaptation. Diet The diet of ''P. corvinus'' includes the ... Pholidoscelis Cineraceus
The Guadeloupe ameiva (''Pholidoscelis cineraceus'') was a species of Teiidae lizards that was endemic to Guadeloupe. It is known from specimens collected by early European explorers. The fossil record shows that it once ranged across Guadeloupe, La Désirade, Marie-Galante, and Îles des Saintes, but in most recent times it was restricted to Grand Ilet, just offshore of Petit-Bourg. It was last recorded in 1914. Its extinction likely occurred when this area was decimated by a hurricane in 1928. The Guadeloupe ameiva was reported as a ground-dwelling lizard. It fed on plants and carrion (including dead individuals of its species). Taxonomy The Guadeloupe ameiva described in 1915 as ''Ameiva cineracea''. The type locality is Grand Ilet offshore of Petit-Bourg on the east coast of Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe. In 2016, the species was moved to ''Pholidoscelis'' based on genetic sequencing and phylogenetic In biology, phylogenetics () is the study of the evolutionary history of lif ... Pholidoscelis Dorsalis
The Jamaican ameiva (''Pholidoscelis dorsalis'') is a species of lizard found only in Jamaica. Taxonomy The Jamaican ameiva was described in 1838 as ''Ameiva dorsalis''. In 2016, the species was moved to ''Pholidoscelis'' based on genetic sequencing and phylogenetic analyses. Biology The Jamaican ameiva is a diurnal lizard with an omnivorous diet, including members of its species. It is found in mesic to dry habitats near the sea, in gardens and vegetated duneland, associated with ''Coccoloba'' and ''Ipomea'' plant species. Conservation The Jamaican ameiva historically occurred throughout the lowlands of Jamaica and its cays in scattered subpopulations, though 7 of the 10 mainland subpopulations are considered possibly extinct. It persists on at least 4 cays offshore of the mainland. It is considered an endangered species on the IUCN Red List The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, also known as the IUCN Red List or Red ... Teiidae
Teiidae is a family of lacertoidean lizards native to the Americas. Members of this family are generally known as whiptails or racerunners; however, tegus also belong to this family. Teiidae is sister to the Gymnophthalmidae, Gymnopthalmidae, and both families comprise the Teiioidea. The Teiidae includes several Parthenogenesis, parthenogenic species – a mode of clonal reproduction. Presently, the Teiidae consists of approximately 150 species in eighteen genus, genera. Morphology and behavior Teiids can be distinguished from other lizards by the following characteristics: large rectangular scale (zoology), scales that form distinct transverse rows Anatomical terms of location#Dorsal and ventral, ventrally and generally small granular scale (zoology), scales Dorsum (anatomy), dorsally, head scales that are separate from the skull bones, and teeth that are solid at the base and "glued" to the jaw bones. Additionally, all teiids have a forked, snake-like tongue. They all possess we ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
