The Phoenix Roadrunners are a defunct minor professional ice hockey team that was based in Phoenix, Arizona. Established in 1977, the team played the 1977–78 and 1978–79 seasons in the Pacific Hockey League. The Pacific Hockey League was a low-level minor professional hockey league that existed for two seasons in 1977–78, and 1978–79. Its member teams from California, Arizona and Washington states, replaced the void left by defunct World Hockey Association franchises, with some teams sharing the names of their predecessors. The idea for the league emerged in the 1977 WHA All-Star Game, as WHA co-founder Dennis Murphy and Indianapolis Racers founder Walt Marlow discussed putting a minor league in the West Coast akin to the recently defunct Western Hockey League. Sandy Hucul
Alex "Sandy" Hucul (December 5, 1933 – February 6, 2022) was a former Canadian ice hockey player and coach. Hucul was born in Eston, Saskatchewan. Hucul had a long playing career, turning professional in 1954 with the Calgary Stampeders of the Western Hockey League. He would remain with the WHL for almost his entire career (barring a partial season in 1957 with the Buffalo Bisons of the American Hockey League), playing for the Spokane Comets, the Victoria Maple Leafs and for his final five seasons, the Phoenix Roadrunners. He won the Hal Laycoe Cup as the league's best defenceman in 1968 and 1972, after which he retired as a player. Hucul served an interim stint as the Roadrunners' head coach in 1970, and was named the permanent coach after his retirement, also serving as head coach of the WHA Roadrunners from 1974 to 1976 when the team joined the World Hockey Association, winning the Howard Baldwin Trophy as the coach of the year in 1975. Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum is a 14,870-seat multi-purpose indoor arena in Phoenix, Arizona, located at the Arizona State Fairgrounds. It hosted the Phoenix Suns of the National Basketball Association from 1968 to 1992, as well as indoor soccer, roller derby and major and minor league ice hockey teams. History The Arizona State Fair Commission began planning for an "Arizona State Fairgrounds Exposition Center" as early as February 1960. The Commission envisioned an indoor facility which could be used during the State Fair as well as year-round.
