Phlegra (spider)
''Phlegra'' is a genus of Salticidae, jumping spiders that was first described by Eugène Simon, Eugène Louis Simon in 1876. The name is a reference to a mythical location in both Greek mythology, Greek and Roman mythology. Eugène Simon
Eugène Louis Simon (; 30 April 1848 – 17 November 1924) was a French naturalist who worked particularly on insects and spiders, but also on birds and plants. He is by far the most prolific spider Taxonomy (biology), taxonomist in history, describing over 4,000 species. Work on spiders His most significant work was ''Histoire Naturelle des Araignées'' (1892–1903), an encyclopedic treatment of the spider genera of the world. It was published in two volumes of more than 1000 pages each, and the same number of drawings by Simon. Working at the National Museum of Natural History (France), Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris, it took Simon 11 years to complete, while working at the same time on devising a taxonomic scheme that embraced the known taxa. ''Phlegra bresnieri'' is a species of jumping spiders (family Salticidae). Its specific name ''bresnieri'' honors the 19th-century French Arabist Louis-Jacques Bresnier. This species is mainly present in southern Europe up to Azerbaijan, in Ivory Coast, and in Tanzania. The adults of these spiders reach approximately of length. In the males the carapace is elongated, dark brown or dark grey, with two white and wide longitudinal stripes, running from eyes to posterior edge. Clypeus is yellowish and completely covered of white hairs. The hairy abdomen is dark brown, long and slender, with a median and two lateral white stripes. Günter E. W. Schmidt (born 10 May 1926 in Lübeck; died 23 December 2016 in Deutsch Evern) was a German arachnologist and author of a standard German work on tarantulas, ''Die Vogelspinnen'' ("bird-eating spiders"). He has been described as one of the fathers of German arachnology.
